特蕾莎修女大家都不陌生吧，著名的天主教慈善工作者，獲1979年諾貝爾文學獎，她是阿爾巴尼亞裔人，那麼對於阿爾巴尼亞，大家又了解多少呢？
《經濟學人》10月3號這一期，聚焦阿爾巴尼亞的歌手們，重點講述了他們一路走來的歷程和所扮演的角色。文章一共七段，上一次我們著重分析了前三段，大家有沒有及時鞏固複習呢？今天我們一起來看看剩下的四段有哪些重點吧！

前兩段主要講這些阿爾巴尼亞歌手仍與故土有一定聯繫，且時常被看作是這個國家的代表，並回鄉演出。
首先我們來看第一段。

Throughout history, says Dukagjin Lipa, Ms Lipa’s father, Albanians have been squashed, but the success of this generation of musicians shows that 「given the chance, we excel.」 The stars of the diaspora often perform back home, wrapping themselves in Kosovar or Albanian flags.
squash 在本段中是「鎮壓」的意思。
v. If you squash something that is causing you trouble, you put a stop to it, often by force.
此時相同表達可以替換為：suppress, put down, quell, silence等。
The troops would stay in position to squash the first murmur of trouble.
該部隊將嚴陣以待，一有騷亂聲音即進行鎮壓。
這裡有必要給大家補充一下squash的其他常見意思。
（1）squash作為名詞時，比較常用的意思是「擁擠/擁擠的人群」，比如 It will be a bit of a squash.這會兒有點擠。
（2）squash作為動詞時，基礎的意思是「把……壓扁，把……壓爛」，If someone or something is squashed, they are pressed or crushed with such force that they become injured or lose their shape.比如，to be squashed out of shape被壓得變形。
同義詞有 crush, press, flatten, mash 等。
excel v. /ɪkˈsel/ ~ (in/at sth/at doing sth)to be exceptionally good at or proficient in an activity or subject. 擅長；善於；突出；超常發揮
例如，She has always excelled in foreign languages. 她的外語從來都是出類拔萃。
在寫作和翻譯中，可以用來替換be good at/ do well in。

Besa Luci, editor of Kosovo 2.0, a magazine, says they clearly feel a need to represent the nation and in return earn an outpouring of love. 「My heart bleeds Albanian blood,」 said Ms Rexha on a visit to Albania. In July Ms Lipa courted controversy by tweeting a map associated with extreme Albanian nationalists showing a vast Greater Albania. She later said her post had been 「misinterpreted」.

表示「招致時」，同義詞有invite v. to do something that makes something bad or unpleasant more likely to happen.（熟詞生義）
《經濟學人》往期文章中就用到了invite這個詞。
例如，Voiced by a lifelong Democrat, that suggestion would invite eye-rolling.這裡的「invite eye-rolling」就可以理解為「招致白眼」。
另外需要注意的是，該句中的voice是動詞詞性，意思是「表達觀點」。

The parents of the stars who grew up abroad left the Balkans in the turbulent early 1990s. But it was not always a story of refugee rags to riches. The Ora and Lipa families were part of Kosovo’s elite. Both girls attended a top performing-arts school in London.

a rags-to-riches story 窮人發跡史
Hers was a classic tale of rags to riches. 她的經歷是從赤貧到富有的一個典型例子。
rags 這個單詞本身是「破布」的意思，而riches是「富豪」的意思，這樣一來就很容易理解這個短語的含義了。
菲茲傑拉德筆下了不起的蓋茨比(Gatsby)就是典型的rags to riches的代表。

The pop stars, along with a clutch of Albanian footballers in top teams across Europe, play an 「incredibly important role」 in helping to change Albanians』 image from one of conflict, says Petrit Selimi, a former foreign minister of Kosovo. In 2016 an unusually demure Ms Ora performed in Rome to celebrate Mother Teresa’s canonisation.
clutch n. a ~ of sth [ sing. ] ( BrE ) a group of people, animals or things 一群（人或動物）；一批（物品）
He's won a whole clutch of awards. 他獲得一大堆獎。
clutch 作動詞時，意為「抓緊」，grasp or seize sth tightly or eagerly.
比如，to clutch sth in one’s hand 手裡緊緊抓住某物；to clutch sb/sth to one’s chest/body 緊擁/抱緊某人/某物。
另外，clutch也是美國俚語，分享幾個比較地道的表達。clutch (up)變得緊張或焦急，憂心忡忡。比如，①Cool it, baby! Don’t clutch!要冷靜，寶貝兒!別慌!
② I have been known to clutch up before a race.誰都知道，我臨比賽就變得緊張心慌。
《絕望的主婦》（Desperate Housewives）第三季第三集末尾經典旁白也出現了clutch這個詞，表示「緊抓不放」,(Why do we clutchat this baggage)。這段話非常有深意，大家不妨記一下多體會一下。

The luscious Miss Wharton gave me a demure but knowing smile.性感迷人的沃頓小姐對我羞澀地會心一笑。
迪士尼著名動畫電影《花木蘭》中對花木蘭的有關描寫就用到了demure這個詞（quiet and demure）。
