The original story of the lost island of Atlantis comes to us from two Socratic dialogues called Timaeus and Critias, both written about 360 BCE by the Greek philosopher Plato.
Together the dialogues are a festival speech, prepared by Plato to be told on the day of the Panathenaea, in honor of the goddess Athena. They describe a meeting of men who had met the previous day to hear Socrates describe the ideal state.

The Lost City of Atlantis
Most people have heard the story of the lost island of Atlantis. But is any part of the story true?
大多數人都聽說過失落之城『亞特蘭蒂斯』。但是這個故事的哪個部分是真實的呢？
Over two thousand years ago, the Greek writer Plato wrote about Atlantis, an island in the Atlantic Ocean. The island's people were very rich. They built a big city with many great buildings. At the center of the island. They built a beautiful golden temple. But the people became greedy—they had many things, but they still wanted more. So the gods became angry, and the island was struck by earthquakes and very large waves. Finally, the whole island sank into the sea.
大約兩千年以前，希臘學者柏拉圖提到了關於亞特蘭蒂斯，一個位於大西洋的島嶼。據說島上的人民非常富有。他們用各種宏偉的建築建造了一個巨大的城市。在島嶼的中央，他們建造了一個美麗的花園神殿。但是隨之人們別的貪婪，雖然他們有很多的東西，他們還是想要更多的。所以上帝對他們非常生氣，於是，島嶼被地震好海浪侵襲。最終，整個島嶼就沉進了海裡。
Many explorers have looked for Atlantis. In 2004, explorer Robert Sarmast reported finding the remains of a city under the sea near Cyprus. However, Sarmast and other 15 scientists later found out the structures he found under the sea were natural, not man-made.
Many people think Atlantis is simply a story. The purpose of the story is to teach people not to be greedy. Richard Ellis wrote a book about Atlantis in 1999.
He says"there is not a piece of solid evidence" for a real Atlantis
So was the island real or not? We only know one thing:

Plato (through the character Critias in his dialogues) describes Atlantis as an island larger than Libya and Asia Minor put together, located in the Atlantic just beyond the Pillars of Hercules—generally assumed to mean the Strait of Gibraltar. Its culture was advanced and it had a constitution suspiciously similar to the one outlined in Plato’s 「Republic.」 It was protected by the god Poseidon, who made his son Atlas king and namesake of the island and the ocean that surrounded it. As the Atlanteans grew powerful, their ethics declined. Their armies eventually conquered Africa as far as Egypt and Europe as far as Tyrrhenia (Etruscan Italy) before being driven back by an Athenian-led alliance. Later, by way of divine punishment, the island was beset by earthquakes and floods, and sank into a muddy sea.
