Lecture Title:The Next Frontier of Design Professions: Design for the Social Good
Language: English
Synopsis of the Lecture:
The focus of design professions in the last century has evolved from the enrichment of visual experience to the enhancement of physical, psychological, behavioral, and emotional experiences of people. The scopes of design projects have also expanded from product and space to system and service designs. However, the power of design thinking and making could create tremendous innovation not only for business and governmental, but also for social endeavors. American design firms such as IDEO, Fuseproject, and Continuum, have been collaborating inrecent years with NGOs, governments, and foundations, to extend their project boundaries from corporate or governmental to social engagements. China’s techgiant, Alibaba, announced in April 2019 their grand ambition to make major contributions to the social advancement of Chinese society. This is a very exciting and promising opportunity for the design professions to play asignificant role in these meaningful endeavors. The presentation will articulate this emerging development and highlight a successful collaborative project conducted by IBM designers and North Carolina State University’s design students that discovered challenges and created design solutions for anon-profit organization’s social, philanthropic efforts.

Synopsis of the Lecture:
Design needs to consider intertwining and operating the following factors, like imagery and meaning, technology and crafts, strategy and style, structure and rhetoric, context and user, knowledge and experience, curiosity and imagination, etc. Design is like writing. Design can be seen as a poem, an essay, or a novel according to the complexity of the intended function. The creation and innovation of design could be started from creator’s monologue, or simulation of the expectations and conversations in order to attract new market users. In short, the design tells all kinds of stories of life needs, work services and human desires. Under mutual communication of technology and humanity, this has been told repeatedly and written again, which reflects the characterization of the innovation era. Design has constantly written new human stories.
