The major storyline
Story of Yanxi Palace, the latest hitting TV drama set in the reign of the 18th century Emperor Qianlong, featuring the rise of a royal maid to be the ruler’s most-loved concubine, has went viral overseas.
《延禧攻略》，最近火爆全網的一部基於18世紀乾隆年間的電視劇，描述了一位普通宮女如何一路成為皇上的寵妃的故事，已經火到海外去啦！
A young girl named Wei Yingluo mingled into the Forbidden City to secretly dig out the truth of her sister’s death.
一位名叫魏瓔珞的年輕姑娘混入紫禁城秘密調查她姐姐之死的真相。

With a pair of dab hands and a smooth tongue, she gradually established her status in the palace and made some powerful allies, including the Queen and her little brother, Fu Heng.
憑藉著一雙巧妙手和一張巧嘴，她逐漸在宮中樹立了起地位並結交了一些有力的盟友，包括皇后和她的弟弟，傅恆。
After careful investigation, she confirmed that her sister’s death was related to an aristocrat, Hong Zhou, and was determined to seek justice.
經過仔細的調查，她確認了她姐姐的死和一位王爺，弘晝有關，並決心為姐姐伸張正義。
Queen Fucha, an elegant and sophisticated woman,worried that Yingluo would go astray and tried to give her warmth and help.
富察皇后，一位優雅而成熟的女性，擔心瓔珞會誤入歧途，並盡力給她溫暖與幫助。

Under the careful guidance of the Queen, Yingluo grew into a strong and courteous court lady, put down her resentment and started a new journey in the Royal Palace.
在皇后的悉心指導下，瓔珞成長為了一位堅強而優雅的女官，放下了她的憎恨並在皇宮開啟了一段新的人生旅程。

Unfortunately, the queen died mysteriously after a short period, causing the misunderstanding of Yingluo to Emperor Qianlong. The two went from being mutually hostile to eventually empathetic and supportive of each other.
不幸的是，皇后不久後神秘地死亡了，導致了瓔珞和皇帝之間的誤會。兩人從相互厭惡，最終到相互理解與支持。

With great courage, an astute and flexible mind, as well as a generous spirit, Yingluo conquered a series of difficulties in the palace and eventually became a high-ranking imperial concubine who assisted Qianlong along his long-enduring and prosperous reign.
通過非凡的勇氣，敏銳而靈活的頭腦，和寬廣的胸懷，瓔珞在宮中克服了重重困難並最終成為了令貴妃，協助乾隆皇帝長久而繁榮的統治。
What made this 「imperial-court-based」 drama stood out from the others was that it didn’t follow the banal routines played over and over again by all kinds of crews.
使這部清宮劇從眾多同類題材電視劇中脫穎而出的，是它沒有延續其他各種劇組拍過一遍又一遍的陳舊套路。

The major patterns
Pattern No.1: an innocent, lily-white heroine against all b**ches?
套路一：無辜純潔小白女主對抗一群心機女。
From the female character Liu Sanhao in Beyond the Realm of Conscience to the heroine Zhen Huan in The Legendary of ZhenHuan, it goes without saying that the female protagonist in imperial-court-based drama all start with being innocent, harmless and kind 「bunnies」 and then had to 「grow up」 under rivalry pressure imposed by other concubines. Only after about hundreds of 「chicken fights」, will they become sophisticated「boss of the harem」.
從《宮心計》的女主劉三好，到《甄嬛傳》的女主甄嬛，毫無疑問，清宮劇女主都是從單純、無害和善良的「小白兔」，然後在其他嬪妃的競爭壓力下「成長」起來的。只有在幾百回合勾心鬥角之後她們才會變為成熟的「六宮之主」。
However, in Story of Yanxi Palace, the heroine is smart and shrewd in the beginning, able to revenge anyone who meant to harm her, which is totally different from the orthodox 「simpleminded white lily」character setting.
但是，在《延禧攻略》中，女主一開始就十分聰明而狡猾，有能力向故意傷害她的人報仇，與公認的「頭腦簡單的白蓮花」女主人設截然不同。
When a new maid tried to bully her by wetting her beddings, she did not hesitate for a second to pour a whole bucket of water on the maid’s clothes and bedclothes,which cannot be denied —— was quite exciting and blood-boiling.
當一個新宮女通過弄溼她床單的方式欺負瓔珞時，她毫不猶豫地就把一大桶水潑到了那個宮女的衣服和床單上。這看起來讓觀眾覺得：真是大快人心！
And she managed a remarkable 「Penta-kill」 of those aggressive wicked b**ches. This has provided a huge satisfaction for the audience.
她還成功對那些好鬥而邪惡的心機婊們完成了「五殺」。這為觀眾們提供了巨大的滿足感。
Pattern No.2: 「Plastic sisterhood」?
套路二：「塑料姐妹花「？
It is known to all, if you want to survive in the ruthless 「silent battle」 in palace, you』d better join some unions.
眾所周知，若想在毫不留情的無聲的宮廷戰爭中存活下來，你最好加入一些聯盟。
In traditional Chinese imperial-court-based drama, the weakest union is the 「sorority union」. Because sisters within the harem are born to mutually set up traps and slander happens all the time behind each other.
在傳統的中國宮廷劇中，最不牢靠的聯盟就是「姐妹聯盟」。因為後宮的姐妹們生來就會互相挖坑、背後捅刀子。
This 「mutual destruction game」 always peaks at 「the vicious queen」, who just cannot livewithout seizing undeserved political power and bullying other concubines.
這種「互相傷害的遊戲」總是在皇后那裡達到高潮。皇后總是不攫取本不該屬於她的政治權力並欺負一下其他妃嬪，就渾身難受。
However, the queen in Story of Yanxi Palace is neither sarcastic nor jealousy. She kept being kind and helpful to other concubines, and sheltered them from the attack of the Higher-ranking concubine, Mrs. Gao, who happened to be one of the few women who are seriously 「fighting」in this drama. The queen managed to become the core of all positive energy in this show, all the way till her death.
但是，《延禧攻略》裡的皇后既不愛諷刺人也不愛妒忌人。她一直保持著善良和樂於助人的品質，從高貴妃的攻擊下保護了其他的嬪妃。高貴妃是本劇找那個為數不多的幾位「認真宮鬥」的女人了。而皇后成為了這部劇所有正能量的核心，一直到她去世。
This setting seems to be unusual, but it actually catered for the preference of modern audience —— spot 「the clear stream」 within ugly fightings.
這種看似反常的設定實則迎合了當下觀眾的偏好——看到勾心鬥角中的一股清流。
Pattern No.3: Emperor, the staggerer?
套路三：皇帝是根牆頭草？
Legend has it, ancient Chinese emperor usually had about 3 thousand concubines, and would basically choose a different one to sleep with each night.
傳說古代中國皇帝通常有大約三千後宮佳麗。
When it comes to dealing with 「chicken fights」, the sacred and almighty 「Tianzi」 would always become indecisive, irresolute, and easy to be fooled.
只要遇上處理宮中內鬥，平日裡神聖而萬能的「真命天子」就會變得毫無頭緒、猶疑不決，並且輕易被欺騙。
This universal rule does not apply to our Emperor Qianlong. In the drama, he is determined, concentrated, sensible and repellant to those scheming concubines.
這條世界通行的準則並不適用於我們的乾隆爺。在劇中，他堅定、專心、明智而且厭惡那些很有心計的妃嬪。
Once he heard a beautiful voice singing in the Royal Garden and was drawn to it. When he discovered that woman was deliberately waiting for him to pass by and seduce him with her singing as he stopped, he ironically punished her by demanding her to sing all night in the garden, non-stop.
一次他在御花園聽到一個美妙的聲音在唱歌並被歌聲所吸引。但當他發現這個女人是故意在這裡等他經過，並在他停下的時候用歌聲誘惑他時，他諷刺性地命令她在花園裡不停氣地唱一整宿歌作為懲罰。
He even expelled a new concubine with no mercy simply because she had fragrant powder stuffed under her shoes and walked with lily-shaped pattern left on the ground, mimicking a provocative queen who caused the termination of an era.
他甚至毫不留情地驅逐了一個新貴人，只因為她在鞋底填充了香粉，走起路來會在地上留下蓮花圖案。他認為這是在模仿一代亡國之妃的不良行為。
Having a wise and right-minded emperor like Qianlong in this show should be defined as a 「revolution」 in character setting pattern, and a fairly successful one. Many Chinese audience stated that they became huge fans not for the heroine, but for the emperor in the show, praising him as such a 「scarce king resource」.
在這部劇中，乾隆皇帝這樣一位睿智而正直的人設，應當被稱作一次「革命」，而且是相當成功的一次革命。許多中國觀眾表示她們對女主沒那麼感冒，反倒被劇中的皇上圈粉了，並稱讚他是一個「用情專一、稀缺的皇帝資源」。
All in all, as a subject matter that had once swiped all over Chinese mainland but gradually come down in the tide of homogenization, Story of Yanxi Palace succeeded to rejuvenate with its unique characters and delicate plot design. Its shooting techniques and editing procedure also spoke for its international fame.
總而言之，作為一個曾經席捲中國大陸，但逐漸沒落於同質化浪潮中的題材電視劇，《延禧攻略》憑藉它獨特的角色和精妙的劇情成功地實現了一次復興。
它的拍攝技巧和剪輯手法也證明了它的國際化名聲，不是浪得虛名。
So anyway, go and watch this 「universal TV drama」! I bet you won’t regret it.
所以，去看看這部「全民電視劇」吧！你絕對不會後悔的。
