聽到別人說，「May you live in interesting times!」。
誰都知道interesting是「有趣的」的意思，我們的第一反應是對方表達的是一種美好的祝願：「願你生活在有趣的時代」，可能馬上會對對方致以感謝，「Thanks!」。
可是，我們不知道的是，這句話其實是一種反諷，其中「有趣的時代」（interesting times）暗示著「動蕩和紛亂」，帶給普通人的可能是痛苦。實際上「無趣的uninteresting時代」，即和平與安寧，才能讓普通人感到幸福。
因此，May you live in interesting times！表達的不是美好的祝福，而是對你的一種「詛咒」：希望你的生活多災多難一團糟。
很多人認為這句話源於一個古老的中國諺語「寧為太平犬，莫作亂離人」。
因為在1936年英國政治家奧斯汀·張伯倫爵士在一次演講中談到德國違反《洛迦諾條約》對集體安全造成的「嚴重傷害」時說：
「It is not so long ago that a member of the Diplomatic Body in London, who had spent some years of his service in China, told me that there was a Chinese curse which took the form of saying, 『May you live in interesting times.』There is no doubt that the curse has fallen on us.」
「We move from one crisis to another. We suffer one disturbance and shock after another.」
「就在不久前，一位曾在中國服役多年的倫敦外交機構的成員告訴我，中國有一種詛咒，它的形式是說『願你生活在有趣的時代。』毫無疑問，詛咒已經降臨到我們身上。」
「我們從一個危機進入另一個危機。我們經歷了一次又一次的騷亂和衝擊。」
1966年，羅伯特·甘迺迪（第35任美國總統約翰·甘迺迪的弟弟）發表了一篇演講，讓這句話更是廣為人知：
There is a Chinese curse which says 「May he live in interesting times.」Like it or not, we live in interesting times. They are times of danger and uncertainty; but they are also the most creative of any time in the history of mankind.
中國有句詛咒說「願他活在有趣的時代」。不管你喜不喜歡，我們生活在一個有趣的時代。這是一個充滿危險和不確定的時期，但也是人類歷史上最具創造力的時期。
