Christian Silvain (left)vs. Ye Yongqing (right)
Pretty big news happening in the Chinese art world: Ye Yongqing, a high-profile Chinese contemporary artist, is alleged to have copied Belgian artist Christian Silvain for three decades. WeChat account "抄襲的藝術" broke the story yesterday, which has since gone viral in China.
"He has already earned millions," said Silvain, who only found out about Ye after his friend saw Ye's pieces in Germany and noted the similarity. Both Silvain and Ye used symbols and an identical graffiti style in their paintings. Silvain, who developed this style a decade earlier, commands a price 40 times lower than Ye's.
Ye gave an official response to the Southern Metropolis Daily, saying: "We are trying to get in touch with this artist. This is an artist who has a deep influence on me." Ye did not respond to other questions raised by the reporters.
