Co-hosted by Preparatory Committee Of International Art Exchange Exhibition

Artworks confront all artworks within their space.

When placed in a new space

They change orientation

speak differently

take on new lives

assume new values.

Art is a reflection of humanity, and collectively we are in need of personal connection and essential discourse which art exchange exhibitions provide. 「The 20th Japan International Art Exchange Exhibition」 at the Chiba City Museum of Art is of particular importance. After over a year of world-wide lockdowns, quarantines and isolation from the world as we knew it, the potential of this exhibition was enthusiastically welcomed around the globe. From the start, the show represented a metaphoric promise that our world might not be collapsing after all, and has provided a refreshing relief from the status quo. The great Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh said, 「Art is to console those who are broken by life.」 We were there there – broken and discouraged. Planning for this Exchange has provided the inspiration we needed to get back to work; so we did – with confidence, believing that even if a mandate were to necessitate a postponement of the show, the details would  be handled in a trustworthy manner, through the wise leadership of our chairman, Mr. Shimmin Katsu.

I would like to thank Mr. Katsu and the sponsors, for their tenacity in bringing this exchange to fruition, and for inviting me to be a part of the team. Thank you also to the Chiba City Museum of Art for acknowledging the artistic contributions of hundreds of international artists, and allowing the exhibition to materialize in one of Japan’s most historic museums.

In final, it is my desire that these curated works, with their intentionally broad range, will enable us to bring together our shared human experience; with expectation that it would contribute to a more compassionate sense of connectedness in hope that it would change the trajectory of our future – individually and collectively.

The 20th (JAPAN) International ART Exchange Exhibition

The 20th (Japan) International Art Exchange Exhibition will be held from August 3 to 8, 2021 at Chiba Art Museum, Japan. Due to the novel coronavirus pneumonia infection prevention and control, artists who participated in the exhibition were restricted to visit Japan, and the scale of the exhibition was also affected. In particular, I would like to mention that Ms. JULIENNE JOHNSON, the art consultant of the international art exchange, has made a lot of work and efforts for the exhibition, making the exhibition go smoothly! I would like to express my heartfelt thanks!

Cultural exchange serves as a bridge for the interaction of global humanities and academic communication. The exchange and integration of cultures, ideas and concepts have become a new world trend, and now, all kinds of cultures, thoughts, opinions and information has been closely interconnected without any barriers. As such, exchange and integration have inevitably become the best choice and circumstance for the survival and improvement of all kinds of cultures. An era featuring the Internet as the technical strength and connecting link is forming.

Art reflects the development of society, and strongly suggests the direction of the changing times with its visible form and performance. The advantage of the art is to convert the interior thoughts, opinions, and emotions into the exterior visual forms that not only reveal the art itself, but also intensively reflect the cultural change, the very source of the art.

Art responds to this era with its own expression and characteristics, and the concept of exchange and integration has been prevailing over different kinds of arts. The emergence of new art forms including conceptual art, installation art, performance art, and image means that not only the visual art has went beyond the traditional art styles, but also the artistic expression has transcended the boundary of the art and stepped into a bigger world.

The breakthrough of artistic expression and art boundary will certainly give birth to a new platform for the presentation and performance of the art, which means an era embracing a variety of art forms and echoing the exchange and integration has been welcomed.

The 20th (Japan) International Art Exchange Exhibition is an opportunity for the exchange and interaction of global cultures, a happy get-together with mutual respect, inclusiveness, and mutual learning, and an exploration, an experience, and also a start of the 「cultural journey」 for all participating artists. Therefore, I am fully confident that this exhibition will be a culture-related 「international art feast」, and also a witness of the precious friendship of all artists from home and abroad.
