《The Tiny Seed》是一本寓教於樂的圖畫書，

Eric Carle爺爺藉由許多小種子

乘風離開果莢，直到落地生根、開花的旅程，

以簡單的文字，明朗的圖畫，

清楚地呈現生命之息息相關、延續不易。

這是一本不需要太多解說，孩子便能明確感受的圖畫書，

生命就是這樣充滿偶然和巧合，用平和的心態對待孩子的成長，

一開始慢的不一定後勁不足，厚積薄發的力量更不可小覷。

「生命」的價值與延續，不言而喻。

It is Autumn.

秋天來了，

A strong wind is blowing.

大風吹來，

It blows flower seeds high in the air 

把花種子們高高地揚起來，

and carries them far across the land.

帶到遠方。

One of the seeds is tiny, 

在這些種子中間，有一粒特別細小，

smaller than any of the others. 

比別的所有種子都小。

Will it be able to keep up with the others?

這小種子能不能跟上別的種子呢？

And where are they all going?

這些種子又會去哪裡呢？

One of the seeds flies higher than the others.

一粒種子飛得特別高，

Up, up it goes! 

越飛越高！

It flies too high and the sun's hot rays burn it up.

它飛得太高了，熾熱的陽光把它燒著了。

But the tiny seed sails on with the others.

我們的小種子同別的種子一起繼續旅行。 

Another seed lands on a tall and icy mountain. 

另一粒種子停在高高的冰山上。

The ice never melts, and the seed cannot grow. 

山上的冰終年不化，種子不能生長。

The rest of the seeds fly on.

剩下的種子繼續飛，

But the tiny seed does not go as fast as the others.

但我們的小種子沒有別的種子飛得那麼快。

Now they fly over the ocean. 

現在，種子們正飛越大海。

One seed falls into the water and drowns. 

一粒種子掉到海裡，淹沒了。

The others sail on with the wind. 

別的種子隨風飄著，

But the tiny seed does not go as high as the others.

但我們的小種子沒有別的種子飛得高。

One seed drifts down onto the desert. 

 一粒種子飄落到沙漠裡。

It is hot and dry, 

大沙漠又熱又幹，

and the seed cannot grow.

種子不能生長。

Now the tiny seed is flying very low, 

現在，我們的小種子已經飛地很低了，

but the wind pushes it on with the others.

不過，借著風力它還能跟上別的種子。

Finally the wind stops 

風終於停了，

and seeds fall gently down on the ground. 

種子們慢悠悠地落到地上。

A bird comes by and eats one seed. 

一隻小鳥走過，把一粒種子吃了。

The tiny seed is not eaten.

我們的小種子沒被吃掉，

It is so small that the bird does not see it.

 它太小了，小鳥都看不見。

And the Winter is coming....

Eric Carle爺爺講述生命旅程的一本繪本，

書裡介紹了四季更替，陽光、溫度、空氣、水分

對種子傳播生長的影響。

如果錯過生長的時節，種子不會發芽生長。

如果生長的環境不適宜，也不能生長。

一個生命的成長的過程有多麼艱難！

本書的語言雖然有大段的描寫，

但是都是比較好理解的簡單句。

爸爸媽媽在給寶貝讀繪本時，

可以放心閱讀。

讀後也可以和寶寶進行

「Tiny Seeds at home」的小活動，

從土壤、種子品種，花盆容器

一系列過程，培養寶貝的動手能力，

了解一顆小生命成長的不易，

和關愛小植物的愛心和耐心。
