雅思口語:a place near water

　　不知道為什麼雅思出題官對water這個話題為什麼那麼執著，在雅思官方編寫的參考書裡面，也會單獨為water列一個單元。所以，有關什麼「江河湖海」等water的描寫，不管是好的方面，還是被汙染的方面，常年準備好一些素材，總是有備無患的!下面就以一條江為例，從正反兩方面描寫一下，大家可以積累一些常用的表達，整合在自己的答案中去。

　　Well, this topic reminds me of the Songhua River in my hometown, which has been seriously contaminated. It’s just heartbreaking.

　　It used to be a perfect place for swimmers, I mean, the water there is crystal clear, and safer than that in a swimming pool, 『cause I heard there are people getting allergies or rashes after swimming in certain pools. Maybe that’s because there’s no chemicals.

　　And the views nearby were enjoyable, I mean, the willow trees looked gorgeous in the breeze, and there were pleasant smell from the fragrant flowers. People could hear the beautiful singing of birds. Everything was just idyllic.

　　But now, things are completely different. The water has been contaminated since a factory was opened a year ago. The waste water has been pumped from the factory directly into the river, which killed the fishes and other living things in the river. So the ecosystem in that area has been seriously destroyed. No one would go there to take a talk or have a picnic anymore. And maybe because of the 『Broken windows theory』, people just stopped protecting the environment nearby. We could see garbage scattered on the riverbank, and there are plastic bags floating on the surface of the water. And sometimes there would be terrible smell coming from that area.

　　如果想說這片區域沒有被汙染之前還有什麼好的方面，可以說：

　　That area is open to the public for free, and the best part is, during weekends, there are people volunteering to be lifeguards to protect children having fun in the water. It’s not far from the city center, so the public transportation is quite convenient. And driving yourself is also a good option, 『cause there are plenty of parking spaces nearby.

　　語言點解析：

　　contaminate = to make a substance or place dirty or no longer pure by adding a substance that is dangerous or carries disease 例如：

　　The drinking water has become contaminated with lead.

　　contaminated blood/ food/ soil

　　a river contaminated by pollution

　　heartbreaking = to make people have a strong feeling of sadness. 例如：

　　a heartbreaking story

　　It's heartbreaking to see him wasting his life like this.

　　rash = an area of red spots on a person's skin, caused by an illness or a reaction to something 例如：

　　I woke up covered in a rash.

　　I come out in a rash (= a rash appears on my skin) if I eat chocolate.

　　The sun brought her out in (= caused) an itchy rash.

　　a heat rash (= caused by heat)

　　fragrant = having a pleasant smell 例如：

　　fragrant herbs/ flowers/ oils

　　The air was fragrant with scents from the sea and the hills.

　　Swallows swooped through the fragrant evening air.

　　idyllic = peaceful and beautiful; perfect, without problems 例如：

　　a house set in idyllic surroundings

　　to lead an idyllic existence

　　The cottage sounds idyllic.

　　lifeguard = a person who is employed at a beach or a swimming pool to rescue people who are in danger in the water
