因為學習表達一定要了解應該在什麼情境中使用，所以本期加上了內容概要，以及適當的劇情說明。
S1E02 The One With the Sonogram at the EndCarol懷孕了，Ross糾結向父母坦白。Carol和Susan請Ross陪同去產檢，大家吵得不可開交，就在Ross準備撒手不管走人的那一刻，他聽到了寶寶的心跳...
Rachel打算給Barry歸還婚戒，本來心懷愧疚，卻發現Barry和自己的伴娘Mindy曾一起去度蜜月，並依然打得火熱。
1. 耐著性子熬過
劇情：本集一開始，大家在聊男女對接吻的不同態度。幾位女性普遍很看重接吻，而男性卻認為接吻不過是用來「暖場」的，男性關心的是「進入正題」。
喵老師說：
- sit through意思是「坐著挨到...結束」，經常可以搭配film, lecture,meeting等。比如說：The movie is so bad that I could hardly bear to sit through it. 電影太難看了，我簡直沒辦法看完（熬到結束）。有意思的是，這個句子裡說的是sit through sb而不是sth。
- stand-up comedian 單口相聲演員。這種藝術形式叫stand-up comedy。
- Pink Floyd我就不介紹了，聽首歌吧。如果想進一步了解，可以參考這篇文章：僅僅說傳奇，還難以形容Pink Floyd
臺詞：Well...she
has issues.喵老師說：issue的意思很多，這裡的
have issues (with sb/sth) 意思是「有問題，有分歧」。例如：Anna
has major issues with her employer. 安娜與她的老闆有嚴重的意見分歧。還有一個常用的表達：make an issue of sth 對...小題大做。臺詞：Ah, well, in here, anyone who stands
erect...喵老師說：上回有人留言說我開車，這樣一部面向成人觀眾的劇，怎麼可能不開車。此處有笑聲，所以必須寫一下。erect有「直立」和「勃起」的意思。後面的劇集中還出現過Joey覺得Homoerectus（直立人，已滅絕，被認為是人類的祖先）這個詞很好笑，而Ross不知道他笑什麼的段子。畢竟，對於Ross這樣嚴肅的科學工作者，整天見這個詞早已失去了笑點。臺詞：Are you
through with that?劇情：Monica的父母要來家裡，Monica一直很緊張，忙著收拾。所以就像搶小孩的東西一樣，趕快把Joey的飲料瓶收拾了。
喵老師說：替換finish的表達來了！
be through with意思是「完成的；結束的」例如：Are you through with the mopping？你把地拖完了嗎？擴展一下，be through (to sth)意思是「通過（考試等）」。例如：She's through to the next round of interviews. 她通過了，可參加下一輪面試。
臺詞：I just don't wanna give them any more
ammunition than they already have.
譯文：我只是不想給他們更多的把柄（不想讓他們有藉口說我）。喵老師說：ammunition的本意是「彈藥」，另一個（此處的）意思是：（辯論或討論中可攻擊對方的）信息，事實。例如：The letter gave her all the ammunition she needed. 這封信給了她所需的一切有力證據。這個詞也是一個特別精準的表達，比如你媽媽到你家裡之前，你拼命打掃衛生，就是不想讓她來了說你（give her ammunition）。臺詞：Hi Barry! Remember me? I'm the girl
in the veil who
stomped on your heart in front of your entire family!劇情：Rachel逃婚後，總是要面對，她第二天準備把婚戒還給Barry。- in the veil 雖然字幕裡翻譯是「身穿婚紗」，其實翻譯為「披著頭紗」更為準確。veil作名詞指「面紗；面罩」。作為動詞，意思是「掩蓋」：I think it best to
draw a veil over the whole incident. 我認為這整件事最好是避而不談。- stomp 怒氣衝衝地走→
stomp on sb 粗暴對待；踐踏（主要用於美式英語）。例如：This is another example of the big companies joining together to
stomp on small businesses. 這又是一個大公司聯合起來搞垮小企業的例子。臺詞：Kinda
puts that whole pillow thing
in perspective, huh, Mon?喵老師說：
put sth in(to) perspective 客觀地比較，看待。之前Monica因為父母要來，緊張得不停fluff the pillows（把沙發坐墊拍打鬆軟），而得知Ross的前妻Carol懷孕的重磅消息後，枕頭還算個什麼事兒。perspective這個詞，大家可能比較熟悉「觀點，角度」的意思，它還指美術裡的「透視法」，大概就是說近大遠小，有立體感。
臺詞：Well now, how-how do you
fit into this whole thing?喵老師說：fit into通常指「與...一致，相協調」，可以理解為，面對某種局面，找到自己的位置。例如：Fostering is a full-time job and you should carefully consider how it will
fit into your career...撫養孩子是全天候的事，應該仔細考慮如何將它與事業協調起來。下次看到「你現在要怎麼辦」，除了What are you gonna do，試試fit into吧！臺詞：The big one
had a thing for you, didn't she?喵老師說：
have a thing for sb的意思是「非常喜歡某人」，這個用法相當常見，但是不知道為什麼詞典上沒查到。劍橋雙解詞典上有一個類似表達，用about表示兩個完全相反的意思：
have a thing about sth/sb （informal） ：非常喜歡…；特別討厭… 例如：She's
got a thing about spiders - she won't touch them.
實際使用中，我看到它作為
「討厭」「對...不爽」的意思要佔大多數。
臺詞：
I know this is going to sound unbelievably selfish,
but, were you planning on
bringing up the whole baby/lesbian thing? Because I think it might
take some of the heat off me.譯文：我知道這樣要求過於自私，但是你能提一下你前妻懷孕以及她是個同性戀的事嘛？因為那樣好歹能讓我稍稍喘口氣。當你想對別人提要求，又覺得不太合適的時候，就可以用
I know...but...這個句式。但是，其實我挺討厭這種用法的，比如經常有人說，"我知道這樣問很冒昧，但是我還是想知道..."明明知道冒昧就別問了。比直接問還要讓人討厭。當然Monica的要求一點都不過分。take the heat off sb意思是「使某人少受批評」，或者說「幫某人擋子彈」。take the heat off sb INFORMALIf someone or something takes the heat off you, they reduce the amount of criticism you have to deal with: The deputy's resignation over the scandal has taken some of the heat off his superior.
11. 這幾句就是覺得太經典了，必須放上來，沒啥語言點。劇情：Monica的媽媽果然挑剔，一會兒fluff the pillows，一會兒說飯菜不好吃，一會兒又說Rachel雖然逃婚，但她至少有機會站在神壇上（結婚），不像某些人，連機會都沒有。Monica以為爸爸要維護她，開心不過一秒...有這樣的父母，Monica活到今天也是挺不容易的。真心心疼。臺詞：Look, there are people like Ross who need to
shoot for the stars. Other people are
satisfied with staying where they are.譯文：Ross這種人註定目標高遠，其他人則安於現狀。
喵老師說：
shoot for the stars 射擊的目標都指到星星上了，那得多高遠呀。與之相對的就是satisfied with staying where they are。這兩句話通用度很高，建議背下來。還有一個類似表達：
shoot for the moon，也是美式英語，意思是「力爭最好」。例如：You might as well shoot for the moon and ask for a promotion as well as a raise.你不妨儘量爭取一下，同時要求升職和加薪。臺詞：No news, no little
anecdotes to share with the
folks?喵老師說：anecdote的意思是"逸聞趣事"，這裡翻譯為八卦很合適。美國人喜歡用
folks來表示家人，尤其是
父母。例如：I don't even have time to write letters to my folks. 我甚至沒有時間給家裡人寫信。推薦一首Stephen Foster的經典老歌Old Folks At Home，小學音樂課上學過中文版，叫《故鄉的親人》：
臺詞：She's like this
high-powered,
driven career type.喵老師說：high-powered形容機器強有力的，例如a high-powered computer。形容人十分成功的，能力很強的，例如
a high-powered lawyer。Phoebe這句話是描述自己的twin sister Ursula，聽了這句話大家以為Ursula在做什麼了不起的工作，結果Phoebe一如既往給人驚喜：She's a waitress。high這個前綴也很好用，以後我們還會遇見
high-maintenance 難搞的，難伺候的。
driven的意思是「奮發努力；執著的」，因為drive作為名詞可以表示「幹勁；決心」。臺詞：Well, you may wanna
steer clear of the word 'dumped'.
Chances are he's gonna be this, this broken shell of a man, 'know.譯文：你應該避免用"甩"這個字眼，因為現在他很有可能正痛不欲生。- steer 的意思是"駕駛"，clear的意思是"脫離...的；不接觸的"。所以，
steer clear of...就是"避開..."，把dump這個詞當成一個障礙物，開車（說話）的時候繞開它。也可以說stay clear。
- Chances are "有可能"是非正式用法，口語中用這個開頭很方便，因為直接可以接句子。寫作中還是最好別用。- 你看，Ross和Rachel對話中，把自己稱為he，有點出離的幽默。我發現美國人特別喜歡換各種方式來表達"我"，就是不說I。前兩天看一個芭蕾舞真人秀（Breaking Pointe），裡面一個女舞者告訴男朋友，自己被老闆提升為獨舞演員了，她沒有說I'm promoted to a soloist 而是說：Now you are looking at a soloist!
臺詞：Sorry I'm late, I
was stuck at work. （聽原劇聲音好像是got stuck）喵老師說：be stuck at/in... 意思是"陷入困境的；無法脫身的"。喵老師說：說到嘔吐，可能會想到vomit或者throw up。
gag的意思稍微輕一點：if you gag, you choke and nearly vomit，將吐未吐。gag的最基本意思是"塞口物"，讓人不能說話、喊叫。所以，作動詞就有了這樣的用法：The government is trying to gag the press. 「讓...無法發聲」。多麼寶貴的用法啊，一定要記住。臺詞：Things change,
roll with the punches.roll with the punches informal
■to be able to deal with a series of difficult situations 渡過一道道難關；克服一連串困難這個表達本來是說拳擊比賽中，別人出拳打你，你就要躲閃，避免被打。臺詞：I believe Julia's

taken yet.譯文：- 哦！你植髮了！ - 小心點，還沒長牢呢。喵老師說：本來糾結要不要寫這一條，想到現在植髮這麼普遍，還是寫上吧，說不定哪天就用上了。By the way，我也需要plugs，請捐款給我。- plug的這個意思也沒在詞典上找到。看樣子「植髮「可以叫
hair plug或者是
hair transplant。已經種植上去的頭髮就直接叫plugs。
- take（我覺得直接翻譯為
生根或者
長得牢比較好）■to work or perform as expected 起作用；奏效，顯出效果•These new plants haven't
taken - they don't like this dry soil.這些新植物長得不好——它們不適應這種乾燥的土壤。喵老師說：這個地方很有意思，Rachel來找Barry的場景發生在Barry的診室裡（他是牙醫），而且有一個小男孩病人在。這裡Barry說spit有兩個意思：1. 快點說出來（也可以說Spit it out）；2. 吐出來。Rachel一開始以為Barry對她說話，所以懵逼了問What？然後小男孩說「Me」，是叫我吐啦~Spit it out! informal
■used to tell someone to start speaking or to speak more quickly, when they are unwilling to speak or are speaking slowly 有甚麼儘管說出來！爽快點吧！
•Come on, spit it out, who told you about this?說吧，爽快點，是誰告訴你這事的？
臺詞：No no no, she
gets a credit, hey, I'm in there too.喵老師說：credit是個特別好用，意思也很多的詞，建議花點時間掌握。這裡的credit意思是「讚揚；認可」。例如：We don't mind who gets the credit so long as we don't get the blame...誰受到表揚無所謂，只要我們不挨批就好。上一級中也有credit出現，我漏掉了，經過@傑哥提醒補充於此：臺詞：'Cause I think that
borders on child abuse.喵老師說：border我們熟悉的意思是「邊界」。趕快用border on來替換你的almost吧！border on
sth ■If behaviour, a quality or a feeling borders on something more extreme, it is almost that thing 接近於，近乎 •His suggestion borders on the ridiculous.他的建議近乎荒謬。•She possesses a self-confidence that borders on arrogance.她的自信接近於自大。臺詞：so they'll

gets his way!譯文：這樣大家最後只會叫她Geller，他就此得逞！
wind up意思是「以...告終」，一般都是不太好的結果。例如：Both partners of the marriage
wound up unhappy. 最後婚姻雙方都不幸福。 ADVANCED only singular informal
■If someone gets or has their way, what they want happens
•If she doesn't
get/have her
(own) way, she sulks like a four-year-old. 如果她無法得逞（隨心），她就像四歲小孩一樣生悶氣。臺詞：Knock knock! How are
we today? Any
nausea?- 我不知道這是不是國外醫生的特色，對待病人像哄小孩似的。人家不說How are you，而是說How are
we。可能在國內被虐待久了，真的覺得這種baby talk的說話方式很肉麻。- 另外值得注意的是：nausea的發音。詞典上大多寫/ ˈnɔ:zɪə/，而你看美劇的時候就會聽到/na:ʒə/，「那惹」。
臺詞：Wh- are you
welling up?喵老師說：Monica知道自己要當姑姑了，激動得熱淚盈眶。well在這裡的意思是「
湧出；冒出」。例如：He fell back, blood
welling from a gash in his thigh.他向後倒去，鮮血從他大腿上的一個口子裡湧了出來。well up的意思和well一樣。美國人說話喜歡用動詞+介詞結構，比如help out。
喵老師說：Rachel知道了Barry和Mindy的事情，氣鼓鼓地給Mindy打電話，放出了惡狠狠的祝福。沒辦法，Rachel就是能壞得恰到好處，讓人討厭不起來呀！a cheap shot，字幕裡翻譯的挺好，我覺得還可以翻譯為「罵人沒品」。a cheap shot
■a criticism of someone that is unfair 惡意批評•She dismissed his comments as
a cheap shot, saying that he was only concerned to defend himself. 她說他只顧為自己辯護，而他的評論純屬惡意攻擊。•His remark was
