North Korea blew up the inter-Korean liaison office building
On the afternoon of June 16, North Korea blew up the inter-Korean liaison office building in the Kaesong Industrial Complex. The office was opened in 2018 to help the two Koreas officially in a state of war to communicate. It had been empty since January due to Covid-19. Tensions between North and South Korea have been escalating① for weeks, prompted by defector② groups in the South sending propaganda across the border. It is now believed that such a drastic move by North Korea is part of a response to South Korean civic groups violating the Panmunjom Declaration by dropping insulting③ leaflets④ on North Korea via⑤ balloons. Whatever the reason, it's a blow to the South Korean administration that pushed so hard for engagement. (BBC)
