the more...the more...結構其實是一個從句+主句的結構:
1. 第一個the more...相當於一個原因狀語從句, 是從省略了表示原因的連詞as等進化而來的(也可理解成是省略了if的條件狀語從句); 第二個the more...引導的是主句.
eg.As a mammal's skin is thicker(從句), it has less hair(主句). 轉換為:
The thicker a mammal's skin is(從句), , the less hair it has(主句).
2.兩個the都是副詞(而非冠詞), 表示程度並修飾後面的形容詞比較級. (前後兩個the的意思在 韋氏字典解為: the: adv. 2 a : to what extent b : to that extent )
the more...the more...結構的三個原則
1. the more後面的名詞必須使用冠詞或所有格.
如本題的the more the children..., the greater their ...
2. 後面的謂語如果是be動詞的話, 可以省略, 這一點對於前後兩個都適用. (特別當主謂語時it is時, 常同時省略.)
eg.What size box do you want?---The bigger, the better. 就是的The bigger it is, the better it is的省略結構. 上面的252題the greater...引出的主句顯然省略了Be動詞is, 表語是greater, 提到句首加副詞the表示程度, 構成並列的
3. 第二個the more後面可以使用倒裝, 而第一個後面卻不行. (因為只有主句才能倒裝,從句絕不能倒裝! 如果繼續深究第二個the more後面什麼時候用倒裝時, 可認為如果主語長,謂語動詞短時, 為避免頭重腳輕, 主謂語倒裝.
