《Experience as Dance》
Anna Halprin
Anna Halprin pioneered what became known as 'postmodern dance', creating work that was key to unlocking the door to experimentation in theater, music, Happenings, and performance art. This first comprehensive biography examines Halprin's fascinating life in the context of American culture - in particular popular culture and the West Coast as a center of artistic experimentation from the Beats through the Hippies. Janice Ross chronicles Halprin's long, remarkable career, beginning with the dancer's grandparents - who escaped Eastern European pogroms and came to the United States at the turn of the last century - and ending with the present day, when Halprin continues to defy boundaries between artistic genres as well as between participants and observers. As she follows Halprin's development from youth into old age, Ross describes in engrossing detail the artist's roles as dancer, choreographer, performance theorist, community leader, cancer survivor, healer, wife, and mother. Halprin's friends and acquaintances include a number of artists who charted the course of postmodern performance. Among her students were Trisha Brown, Simone Forti, Yvonne Rainer, Meredith Monk, and Robert Morris. Ross brings to life the vital sense of experimentation during this period. She also illuminates the work of Anna Halprin's husband, the important landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, in the context of his wife's environmental dance work. Using Halprin's dance practices and works as her focus, Ross explores the effects of danced stories on the bodies who perform them. The result is an innovative consideration of how experience becomes performance as well as a masterful account of an extraordinary life.

If architecture, even a city, has a "physical" connection with people, it should be the mathematically described relationship formed by the sense of time and space, namely rhythm, which is a kind of dance-like experience. In a series of research and practice of author Anna Halprin and her husband Lawrence Halprin, rhythm is both a design method and a mode of thinking.
This book provides an introduction to the theory of everyday life from a unique historical and critical perspective. The author explores the development of concepts of everyday life from georg Schimel's cultural sociology through the polling projects of the 1930s to the contemporary theories of Michel d 'Esselto and others.

"Everyday" is a word we love to use, but as a term it begins with a shift in thinking across the Western world in the context of a crisis of rationalism, and involves many obscure philosophical texts. Ben Hemmel's book is the best way to get us into the field quickly.
The History of the Human Body and Modernity analyzes the profound reasons for the important role of the body in human spirit and life from the perspective of sociology and culturochemistry, and points out that modern society often treats the human body differently from the human body -- the latter is usually regarded as a passive possession rather than a specific source of flesh and blood. After the publication of The History of human Body and Modernity in France, it has received continuous attention: the author has put forward a very influential view in the academic circle: the body has a special status, is the indispensable stage of self-existence and self-expression, but also the symbol of the individual, forming the boundary with the outside world.

"Humanism" is the important ideological basis of all humanities and art disciplines. However, with the development of modern technology, the lofty concept of "man is the measure of all things" is being disintegrated. Le Breton's book vividly illustrates how our senses are being reshaped by technology. Perhaps the most distinctive "modernity" feature of the human body is the immobility. What is a person is an unstable concept that needs to be repeatedly questioned.
《Animal Architects:Building and the Evolution of Intelligence》
James L. Gould / Carol Grant Gould
In the animal world, all kinds of strange architectural forms, such as nests, spider webs, beehives and even otter DAMS, are purely adapted to the environment? Or is it just like the buildings of human society, where beauty and wisdom are accumulated in addition to basic functional considerations? The authors, who have been studying animal behavior for many years, are the first to explore, from the perspective of animal architects, how animals perceive their surroundings and how their intelligence accumulates and evolves. The author start with simple words let readers understand the motives of animal building, and then by chapter building general readers familiar with animals, including the spider's silk screen, solitary insects of the building instinct, honeycomb and ant hole, a wide variety of bird's nest, to find out from these animal instinct, cognitive process and the social patterns behind the wisdom, the extended construction blueprint, Even to the beauty of nature, the author does not forget to explore the essence of human wisdom from the observation of animal architecture.

The discussion about "construction" in architecture is inevitably mixed with the content of history and culture, which seems to be entangled. But in "zooarchitecture," we can suddenly cut out all distractions and focus on "pure" construction based entirely on the materials and tools themselves.
This is quite a mind-numbing book.
What is geographic media? According to McQuarr, geographic media is "a new technological condition closely related to the spatialization process of different media platforms in modern cities", which is represented by four intersecting dimensions: convergence, ubiquity, location awareness and real-time feedback. What does geographic media bring? The expansion of digital media in urban space has become a powerful "time machine" that has greatly expanded human senses, social organization and cultural norms. What changes have taken place in the relationship between media and urban social space? What is the significance of the proposal of geographical media? The increasingly complex relationship between "media" and "immediacy" in the social interaction process could not be explained by the classical media concept and communication reproduction theory, and new concepts such as "geographic media" and new interpretation paradigm were needed. With the book Geographical Media, McQuarr presents a wide and profound academic picture for communication scholars: phenomena, problems, theories, research methods and interpretation methods, which are different from previous communication studies. Reading this book is an intellectual adventure, like navigating through a maze of ideas.

While architecture has not yet had time to think effectively about new communication media such as the Internet, the field of communication has begun to discuss the issue of urban space in recent years. McCall's work makes us see the possibility of the traditional framework of urban architecture being completely overturned by new technologies.
簡介
Description
"Learning from Las Vegas" (originally revised) and "Architectural Complexity and Contradiction" by Venturi, who rejected Mies van der Rohe's dicta "Less is more" and argued that "less is bald," are considered declarations of modernist architectural thought. He believes that the masses do not understand the language of modernist architecture, and the buildings they like are often ordinary, lively, highly decorative and metaphorical. He thinks that the face of Las Vegas, including the narrow streets, the neon lights, advertising version, fast food restaurants, such as the modelling of trademark, just reflects the preferences of the masses, so he in "learning from Las Vegas" (the original edition) called for the architect to dialogue with the people, accepts the populace to the interests and values, learn from Las Vegas.

At present, The Internet technology has produced an incomparable abundance of virtual reality, which constitutes an impact on the substantive construction of architecture and even gives birth to "Internet celebrity architecture", a "hybrid breed" that has not been accepted by the discipline. In the face of unprecedented turbulence, we should revisit Venturi's classic and look back at Las Vegas, where signs trumps substance.
《Eyes That Saw: Architecture after Las Vegas》
Stanislaus von Moos / Martino Stierli
At the peak of the 1968/69 students' riots at American Universities, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, together with Steven Izenour, pursued their Design and Research Studio on the topic of Las Vegas at Yale School of Architecture. The results of this were condensed into the book Learning from Las Vegas that became a classic almost instantly upon its first publication in 1972. The treatise excited the 1970s architecture world and has remained influential to architects, teachers and theoreticians to the present day.
Some forty years later, Eyes that Saw: Architecture after Las Vegas offers a richly illustrated collection of essays by renowned scholars of art and architectural history, eminent architects, and artists, investigating Learning from Las Vegas and its heritage from various perspectives. Each chapter builds on the knowledge of the radical influence it had on architecture and urban design, visual art, and even on history more generally. Published alongside are documents from the Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates Archive at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as an illustrated chronology of the resonance in international media following the publication of Learning from Las Vegas in 1972.

It is an important reference for the history of Modern French thought and also a masterpiece of the sociology of knowledge. In many cases, profound thoughts tend to take a one-sided stance, and this is true of the writings of the left as well as of the right.

The list is actually an evolutionary process, moving from classical issues of architecture to contemporary thinking, and Stigler's work can help us establish a new paradigm of thinking about the proper relationship between man and technology in the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution. On this basis, we need to rethink what is everyday, what is body, what is architecture.
