Many of those cute uncanny wildlife photos you see on Facebook aren’t as innocent as you think.

Let’s take a look at some famous examples that most people who spend time on the internet have seen:

I can continue on with examples of these uncanny wildlife images. There’s an enormous amount of them on platforms like Facebook. This genre of lucky photos is undoubtedly familiar and endearing because the animals are cute and just… so human like.

All of the animals above are cold blooded. Surely that’s a coincidence, right? Unfortunately, it’s not. There’s a very ugly truth behind these quirky frog pictures.

Cold blooded animals are the favorite among these (typically) Indonesian photographers for a reason: Their mobility is determined by the temperature of their environment.

Sick, unethical photographers take advantage of that. These too good to be true photos can only occur because the animals were refrigerated, glued, or both. It’s common for the posed animal to even be dead.

Most of these photographers find glue risky- that’s why it’s never seen on mammals, whose fur would mat and stick together. Furthermore, glued animals must be killed and are limited in the amount of quirky poses they can do. That’s why typically the most incredible photos come from the end of a photo shoot- serving a double purpose: The photographer has pictures with less extravagant poses to fall back on if needed, and such pictures also fool the public into thinking the frog or lizard was mobile the entire time.

This would have been a finishing shot to a photo-shoot: The red-eyed tree frog above, as is common practice, was glued to a wire to hold its pose - the wire was photoshopped out before being released on public media. The image on the right has had a line photoshopped back in by people aware of the cruelty to demonstrate that it’s indeed no coincidence that all of its limbs are level with one another. It should anyway be obvious on the left- No frog has curled, distorted hands like that. It’s clear to see they』ve been damaged.

No frog sits upright like a person. It’s unnatural. Furthermore, amphibians must keep their skin moist and actually enjoy getting wet- there’s no reason it would be under that leaf, which by the way, appears to be sprouting out of the aloe plant (a different plant species) that the frog is perched on. Is it really reasonable to assume that this amphibian dragged a leaf up onto its perch to protect it from rain?

These photographs are cruel and deceptive. A good rule of thumb is 「If it seems too good to be true, it is」 especially when the animal involved is cold-blooded.

There is very little awareness of this problem- some of these posed photos have received major awards from competitions or even from upright organizations like National Geographic who didn’t know better.
