   It's weekend， so let's have some fun by talking about the cat. Do you like cat? How many different kinds of cats are there in the world? Do you know any expressions about cats?

一、貓的種類

     In 2017, there are 37 species of Abyssinian cats, including American bobtail, American curly-ear, American shorthair, American bristle, Balinese, Baiman, Bombay Duck, British shorthair, Burmese, Chartreux, Colorpoint Shorthair, Cornish Rex, Devon Rex, Egyptian cat, European Burmese cat, exotic short hair cat, Havana brown cat, Japanese shorttail cat, Java cat, Colat cat, labang cat, Maine cat, Felis catus, Norwegian Forest cat, Ocellette, oriental shorthair, Persian cat , RagaMuffin, Ragdoll, Russian blue cat, Scottish fold, Selkek curly, Siamese, siberian cat, Singapore cat, Somali cat, Canadian hairless cat, Tonkinese, Turkish Angora cat, Turkish Van Cat.   

二、與貓有關的英文表達 

1、Like a cat on a hot tin roof 熱鍋上的螞蟻  

     在英式英語中還有一個變體，即 like a cat on hot bricks

2、No room to swing a cat 無立錐之地；狹小逼仄  

3、A Copycat (a person who copies/imitates another)  盲目模仿者(抄襲/模仿他人的人)

4、（Put / set the）cat among the pigeons 引起軒然大波，引發混亂

5、 Rain Cats and Dogs  傾盆大雨

6、let the cat out of the bag無意中洩露了秘密  

      這個表達的由來是這樣的：據說是在中世紀的市場，小豬是被放在袋子裡出售的，有一次賣方會試圖將小豬換成小貓（更便宜），如果不是有人打開袋子，讓貓跑出來（拆穿了奸商的秘密）。

8、cat and dog life 爭吵不休的生活 a life in which partners are frequently or constantly quarrelling

9、cat and mouse game 欲擒故縱的把戲,折磨 keep sb in a state of uncertain expectation

10、not have a cat in hell's chance  意思是「毫無機會，根本不可能做到」

11、While the cat's away , the mice will play. 貓不在，老鼠翻天、山中無老虎，猴子稱大王

12、a cat in gloves catches no mice  猶豫不決，縮手縮腳，不夠果斷

13、fat cat  大亨；闊佬；（尤指公司的）老闆

14、scaredy-cat / fraidy-cat  膽小鬼（尤指小孩）

15、the cat's pajamas / meow / whiskers  【含義】卓越的(或出色的、極好的)人(或事，物)

16、all cats are grey by night  黑暗中難分醜妍

17、cat got your tongue （生氣地質問）為什麼不吭聲? 

18、bell the cat 不懼危險, 挺身而出；為了大家的利益承擔風險  

 19、cool cat 時尚的人（尤指男性）  

 20、cat can look at a king 小人物也有權利；人人平等  

21、wait for the cat to jump  觀望形勢後再作決策;看風使舵;隨機應變

22、curiosity killed the cat好奇害死貓

      貓柔軟而有彈性，從高處往下跳可輕輕巧巧地安全落地。正因為貓具有如此獨特的生命韌性，我們常有」九命怪貓「之說。而在英文裡，也有完全相同地說法：A cat has nine lives.貓固有九條命，但也不是沒有剋星。英文中有curiosity killed the cat(好奇心殺死一隻貓）告誡人們不能有不當地好奇心。

23、cat's paw 爪牙；傀儡；受人利用的人

24、Have a cat nap 美式俚語，表示「小睡一下，打個小盹兒」這個意思

25、a bag of cats  壞脾氣的人

26、hellcat指有惡意、暴力的女人

27、old cat 形容人時表示：「老女人、脾氣壞的老太婆、潑婦」，多含貶義，是罵人的的短語

28、sick as a cat   病的很厲害

29、a cat in the pan  叛徒、中途變節的人 

30、That cat won’t jump  這一手行不通

       順便說一下，8月8日是國際貓咪日。  國際貓咪日由國際動物福利基金會（IFAW）在2002年發起，目的在於慶祝人類與貓咪的友誼，讓人了解貓咪的陪伴可以幫人改善心理健康，以及減輕壓力、焦慮和憂鬱。    

    August 8 is an exciting day for cat lovers: It's International Cat Day. Founded by the International Fund of Animal Welfare (IFAW) in 2002, International Cat Day is intended to celebrate adorable felines and their companionship with people, especially in stressful modern society.
