詞源:steno = narrow (Greek) + soma = body (Greek); in reference to the laterally compressed body present in this species.

鑑別：Hemibates stenosoma differ from H. sp. "stenosoma zambia" in morphology by having a smaller adult size (33 vs. 38 cm), a more elongate body, a less elongate and oblique snout, and a larger eye (Smith 2007); males of Hemibates stenosomahave irregular black blotches on the anterior part of the flank, and a transparent dorsal fin with a black margin and base, whereas H. sp. "stenosoma zambia" have distinct vertical black bars on the flanks, and a reverse pattern in the dorsal fin: transparent at the margin and base, with a broad black stripe in the middle.
