Hebe Tien was once a member of the popular Tainwan girl group S.H.E. But in the eyes of many music critics and fans, it was only when she released her debut solo album in 2010 that she became a real musician. On Dec 15, Tien held a concert at Taipei Arena. The excited singer didn’t stop her performance until 11:15pm. Even though she knew that she had to pay NT$150,000 (for 33,000 yuan) for running over, she just laughed a hearty laugh and said, 「Come on, take my money.」
She said she feels blessed to have her own concerts. 「On my own stage, I can choose my own songs and present them with reflection on my own life experience. That’s a real blessing,」 she told Womany, a Tainwan female fashion website.
Tien now has a say in her own music. She strictly chooses songs for her solo albums and has developed her own style. Take her latest album Day by Day for example, where she sings about small things in her daily life, including brushing her teeth, doing yoga and taking the bus.
It seems like a bad choice when it comes to making interesting music. But Tien has achieved success. The 2015 hit single A Little Happiness has won her a number of nominations at both the Golden Horse Awards and Golden Melody Awards.
For Tien, her biggest wish seems to be expressing her own voice in music. Just as her song Offshore Island goes, 「I’m a small island…I never worry about the small population on my island…I never worry about the small population on my island…I only need those who know me to know me.」

A collection of the year’s top Chinese buzzwords was released on Dec. 14 by a Chinese
magazine (A)called Yaowen Jiaozi. Most of the top buzzwords come from the internet, including memes like 「Slouch down like Ge You」, 「small target」 and 「sinking friendship」. 「Small target」 came from an interview with Wang Jianlin, China’s richest businessman. 「You shouldn’t be too ambitious. Set a small target first, (B.)like earning 100 million yuan,」 Wang said. Earning 100 million yuan is (C)______________for him. But for the general public, 100 million is like (D)___________, not a 「small」 target.
There is a reason behind the popularity of these words.」 There buzzwords show young people’s common confusion. There is too much uncertainty for the future, 」 Zhang Yiwu, professor of sociology at Peking University, wrote for New Weekly.
Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui memorably described her personal performance at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. 「 I used up my prehistoric power, 「 she told a CCTV reporter after her race. (E)Fu Yuanhui used this phrase to say that she had tried her best and she was satisfied with her results.
This phrase shows another emotion among Chinese people, according to Zhang. 「They try to keep a balance between bad and happy feelings in a humorous way.」
