In recent years, the power of science, technology and innovation in Asia has been rising, narrowing the gap with the United States, Europe and other developed countries, and even surpassing them in some aspects. The Board of Directors of the Boao Forum for Asia attaches great importance to this trend and has listed scientific and technological innovation as the top of the five focal areas of expansion of BFA in 2018. Last month, BFA and the Macao SAR Government co-hosted the First Conference of the International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum of BFA (ISTIF), which was attended by nearly 1,000 delegates from 25 countries and regions and provided an important platform for international exchange and cooperation in the field of science, technology and innovation. The launch of this innovation report is another important initiative in the field of innovation, following the First Conference of the ISTIF. The report provides a comprehensive analysis and assessment of innovation development in Asia, and puts forward some important points that deserve our attention.
The report states that the global pattern of scientific and technological innovation capability is developing towards a trend of multi-polarity. Asia, East Asia in particular, is becoming one of the top regions in terms of innovation vigor. The three Asian economies of China, Japan and South Korea have very detailed innovation development strategies in place. China's international competitiveness and global status are rising rapidly, and China is the only country in the top 30 of the global innovation index among middle-income economies. Southeast Asia continues to intensify investment in innovation with Singapore remaining in the leading position and Thailand and Malaysia catching up fast. In South Asia, India is leading by a big margin thanks to growing input by the government. In Central Asia, Kazakhstan tops the five countries in terms of comprehensive science and technology capabilities. The Gulf countries have been forging a new model of economic development in recent years, with an increased emphasis on innovation.

These are artificial intelligence, 5G, industrial robots, intelligent supply chain, mobile payment technology, new retail technology, biomedical technology, digital energy technology, environmental governance technology. In particular, AI has penetrated into all walks of life in Asia, with China, Korea, Japan, India and Singapore at the forefront. China and Korea also lead in 5G technology, which has disruptive implications for transport, energy, manufacturing, education, healthcare, consumption and entertainment. Mobile payment technology is accelerating the efficiency of Asian economies, with China and India leading the way and Asian countries developing rapidly.
According to the report, global innovation clusters and innovative cities are characterized by agglomeration, with the most rapid development in East Asia. The number of clusters in China alone has increased from 7 to 18 within a year. Asian cities are emerging from competition to become innovation centers. A growing number of digital champions, unicorn companies and big scientific research institutions are building up a number of Asian Silicon Valleys. Not only that, Asia-Pacific has become the biggest market for cultural and creative industries, accounting for 33% of global creative industry output value, and 43% of global creative industry employment.
Chairman of Boao Forum for Asia Ban Ki-moon and Vice Chairman of Boao Forum for Asia Zhou Xiaochuan, who both wrote for the report, stressed that innovation is the engine of Asia's future growth and that Asia must seize the opportunity to create a new "Asian miracle" in the new round of global growth.
