「suggests new, flexible ways of using vehicles as 『a tool for communicating with friends』, rather than simply as 『a means of transportation』. The Nails concept integrates advanced communications tools including cellular phones.」

This strangely named pick up concept car is the work of the small Tokyo design studio of Creative Box belonging to Nissan. Whilst talking with designer Shu Takahama about the vehicle, it was soon evident that the sources for inspiration for the design lie very much within a unique Tokyo street fashion.
Being a pick-up usually means having some utilitarian objectives behind the design, but in reality this vehicle has been created by young men for young men, who would then use it as an accessory to help them 'pick up' young women. Although capable of carrying a variety of different loads, the Nails is pitched as a 'funky two seater' with many fashion and product influences to the design.
Street furniture influences include the strident blue painted A-frame shaped cabin with a matt finish, that gives a tough masonry feel to the finish, and the criss-cross texture of the rear deck that simulates the surface pattern of steel stairs and walkways to further contribute to the 'street feel'. The cowl over the door mirrors and the overt technical detailing of the lamps are directly influenced by motorbike design, and the one piece yellow tinted mask at the front echoes contempory sunglasses.
The ubiquitous youth accessory, the user's mobile phone, is used to plug into a pocket provided in the centre of the instrument binnacle to start the car and have the preselected settings for interior features. The tyres appear to wrap over and cover the wheel faces, almost like a latex outfit does a dancer, and creates a slightly sinister effect that is repeated inside on the steering wheel.
The soft rear partition between cabin and rear deck is made of tough waterproof fabric with zips and poppers similar to a rucksack, and the door casings have circular containers which are influenced by contempory sound system design.
Other novel design elements less literally influenced by the urban environment Nails is designed for, include the pick up bed platform that extends all the way through the vehicle to become a front chin and the single 'comb frame seat' that extends sideways to become a seat for two.
Described by Nissan as a tool for comunicating with friends, the Nails concept was one of the most explicit forays into fashion or non-functional based design at the show, and clearly demonstrates that pick-ups can be designed to pull too.
