The iconic sarong Kebaya was designed by Parisian couturier Pierre Balmain in 1968 and in turn the famed 『Singapore Girl』 was born. It’s based on a form of traditional Asian dress and is hand-dyed and decorated using a technique called Batik. The uniform has largely remained the same since it was first designed, although some small enhancements have since been made.

Every sarong kebaya is unique and custom fitted for every flight attendant. In fact, flight attendants are measured every year and a new uniform is made if the flight attendant has changed shape. Around 5,000 sarong kebaya’s are tailor-made every year.

It may not look very practical or easy to move in but the uniform has been adapted so that it’s suitable for emergency situations. Pleats are built into the skirt to allow easy movement, and the skirt can be easily hitched to a shorter length during an emergency.

Singapore Girl’s famously wear sandals that match the colour of their sarong kebaya but they aren’t worn all the time. During takeoff and landing, flight attendants slip on more practical closed footwear should an emergency situation arise.

The neckline of the Sarong Kebaya is actually made out of a straight piece of cloth, and takes meticulous skills to craft a beautiful-looking curve wich makes up the neckline. There are more than 20 darts on each neckline, and although they look uniform, each curvature is custom for each stewardess.
