新冠疫情大流行當前，國際關係也進入了新一輪的考驗。在這個領域中又出現了許多值得我們去思考的問題，組委會導師在眾多辯題中選擇了哪兩個？
2021 NHSDLC春季地區賽賽將圍繞 International Relations 展開辯論。我們邀請諸位辯手在以下兩個辯題中進行選擇：
Resolved: The United States should rejoin the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
Resolved: The United States should remove nearly all of its military presence in the Middle East
Free trade between countries has undoubtedly changed the world in significant ways. Although building free trade partnerships was a key goal of the Obama Administration’s forgien policy, lately free trade has been under attack from the Trump administration in the United States. In particular, Trump withdrew the US from the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The CPTPP is a massive free trade agreement between eleven countries on the Pacific Ocean. The US was actually one of the key authors of the CPTPP under the Obama administration, but under Trump, it has withdrawn from the agreement.
One of the goals of the Biden administration, which will come into power soon, is to undo this trend and get the United States more involved in free trade agreements. Rejoining the CPTPP would perhaps be the single largest action the Biden administration could take to demonstrate America’s renewed commitment to global free trade.
The United States maintains a military presence in over 10 different nations in the Middle East. The reasons for this presence are many and varied. Concerns over issues such as stability, terrorism, and energy security are often cited to justify this massive presence. However, there is more and more domestic and international pressure to curtail US military presence in the Middle East. Many within the US question the actual utility of maintaining such a massive presence, while also pointing to the massive economic and human costs.
Internationally, many see US presence as a self serving force that often fails to uphold human rights, stability, peace, and democracy. Regardless of one’s viewpoint, removing nearly all US military presence is a radical proposal, which makes this topic particularly interesting. Rather than debating the merits of small tactical shifts in military presence, we must advocate for or against a massive shift in US military presence.
