Premier Li Keqiang’s visit
It's been very positive. Premier Li has been warm and open and supportive of a stronger relationship. We've been able agree on some quite significant steps forward, particularly related to the trade and the investment.
As a result of negotiations, which the Premier says the first upgrade of the FTAs, we'll be able to get more of our products into China; and we'll be able to get better rules that applied to our products when they're sold in China. But it's still a negotiation. So we'll be offering to China as well.
We benefit considerably from the trade, from the investment and the tourists. And just in the last few days, there’s been further announcements about further high-quality, long-term investment by China, both in resources here, but also in providing infrastructure for the tourists, hotels, and forestry product plants. And we welcome that.
Look, there's always going to be some debate in New Zealand about investment coming from offshore. But on balance I think that most people realize that it helps jobs and opportunities in New Zealand, and incomes, particularly in our regions outside Auckland.
Oh I am quite convinced that the positive way speaks. Do outweigh (the disadvantages). We understand why people are concerned. That’s why we have quite a lot of rules around investment coming into New Zealand.
With respect to immigration, we remain open to immigration. We had some changes in the rules that do tighten it up a little bit. I've been a bit surprised at the extent to which the Labor Party have said that they are opposed to foreign investment and opposed to immigration that's not how they used to be.
People keep saying it is going to be a hot topic. But has it turned out that way really? Of course it's a concern, but it's mainly a concern about having the infrastructure, having the road and the public transport and schools to accommodate people who want to live in New Zealand.
The biggest single change in the immigration numbers has been Kiwis not leaving. The number of people who come in and become residents and citizens has changed a bit in the last ten years, but not much.
I think New Zealanders are more open to immigration now than they used to be.
I have been around politics for 27 years. I think New Zealanders have a better understanding now right across the country, including in the provincial rural area where often the migrants coming in, doing jobs there have to be done, need to be done, and jobs that have to be filled.
