The weather in Wuhan is getting colder and colder. Do CCNUers sleep soundly these days? In this issue of the song list for night, V would like to introduce a 26-year-old talented singer Keshi to you.
Keshi is an independent music producer, songwriter and singer from Houston, Texas. Many people think that his voice sounds like Troye, soft and clean. But his music is truly different from Troye’s. In 2016, he started publishing his own original Lofi Hiphop works on SoundCloud using the name Keshi. Two years later, after gaining reputation, Keshi quit his job as a registered nurse and signed up as an official singer on Island Records.
But Keshi doesn’t stop at Lofi Hip-pop. He has also created songs with a variety of musical styles. Keshi said in an interview: 「Recently, I』d venture to say Alternative Hiphop/R&B/Pop are the musical styles I’m making. Maybe with some electronic influences here and there. Melodic, moody, yet upbeat trap I guess? I do enjoy pushing the boundaries of what I can create though. It depends on what mood I’m in and who I’m listening to/influenced by at that moment.」
What motivated Keshi to start making music is that he wanted to learn how to play the guitar so he could pick up girls when he was 12. Though he was refused by mom, because she thought he would give it up in a week. His grandpa actually gave him his classical guitar. Then Keshi just fell in love with it and couldn’t leave it. He went down a rabbit hole of watching guitarists play and sing on YouTube, learning their techniques and imitating their different styles. Keshi called himself as a self-taught musician. He started learning music production during his sophomore year in college. The same way he learned guitar, Keshi turned to YouTube and learned by watching tons of tutorial videos and reading guides on how to achieve certain sounds. He was listening to a ton of interesting music at that time.
Right now, Keshi is a combination of his old songwriting and his newfound production skills. Keshi sees his songs as a very concentrated part of himself. It’s like taking all of an emotion and dialing the volume up to the max. All of the songs he writes are based on real-life experiences. Some of the songs are about someone else’s experience, but from Keshi’s perspective as if he were the one in that situation. Such acute empathy came from his early work as a nurse. 「When you hear my music, I want you to realize that it’s okay to be vulnerable. I let my 『bones』 out, so don’t be ashamed of yourself. I try to be as real as I can, and the closer my music gets to my heart, the closer it gets to other people’s hearts.」
One of Keshi’s hit songs, 2 Soon, was created by putting himself in the position of a friend. The story of 2 Soon is about coping with rejection in the worst way: by pretending it didn’t happen. It’s how Keshi would have handled the breakup that a close friend of his had. 2 Soon was also the first song V listened to from Keshi. What initially attracted V was the clear guitar sound and soft melody in the prelude. At first V thought it would be a sweet song, then V listened to the lyrics carefully and found the song so heartbreaking. The empathy is so heartfelt. When drinking with friends, he said he had forgotten her. After drinking too much, left alone, he recognized the truth that he really missed her.
Drank too much
Got the sickness
Pray to god and his son for forgiveness
Same crew but
Another mistress
Every day every night getting wasted
But I miss you
What did I do
**** it up, laugh it off and I lost you
If I pull through
Is it too soon
Turn it up, close my eyes, and I’m with you
You are nothing but an empty shell
Every night he going down to hell
Fake love in a **** hotel
Can’t believe how far he fell
You weak on the floor so you call her cell
「How you been」
「How you doing」
You been good
I been drinking
Way too much
You think that I』d be
Over u over u over u over u
8 calls, all you
But I think about it everyday
Yeah I never missed her anyways
Keshi is also open to sharing his music making process. He called himself a nerd when it comes to music production. Watching producers do their work was so fun to Keshi. He watched videos every day during meals when he was in college. He studied them closely, listened to what techniques they used to make their beats sound modern and commercial, yet unique and listenable. That’s why Keshi gives back his process of making music. Keshi thinks that others would have the same fun he had when he watched his favorite producers make their music.
Most of Keshi’s songs are gentle and healing, perfect for bedtime. It is easy to get pleasantly drowsy in winter. Wish CCNUers good dreams every night.
