英國議會上周宣布，自當地時間21日起，大本鐘將「靜音」四年，進行「重要的維護工作」。157年來，大本鐘一直盡職盡責，而在8月21日中午之後，它就要暫時沉默，直到2021年修繕工作結束。
Big Ben will fall silent for four years as "major conservation works" are carried out on the tower which houses the bell, UK Parliament announced last week. The chimes emanating from the bell, one of London's most famous attractions, have kept time in the British capital for 157 years. At noon on Monday, August 21, Big Ben will sound for the last time until 2021.
大本鐘在維護期間靜音，主要是為了保護維修工人的聽力，而在一些特殊的日子還是可以發聲的。此外，這四年的維護工作總計要花費2900萬英鎊（約合人民幣2.5億元）。

據英國《每日電訊報》網站報導，議員們在通過這項高達2900萬英鎊的工程計劃時，並不知道為了保護工作人員的聽力，大本鐘在這4年裡是要靜音的！
MPs were not told Big Ben would be silenced for four years when they approved a ￡29 million renovation scheme, The Telegraph can disclose. The chairmen of two Commons』 committees have complained that officials failed to disclose that the bell could not be rung to protect the hearing of builders on site.
英國首相德蕾莎·梅伊則希望議長約翰·伯考「儘快」調查維修計劃，她表示：「我們當然希望確保每個工人的安全，但是讓『大本鐘』靜音四年是不合理的。我希望下議院議長能儘快調查此事，以確保我們在未來的四年中還能聽到『大本鐘』的鐘聲。」
The Prime Minister called on Commons Speaker John Bercow to "urgently" review the plans. She told reporters: "Of course we want to ensure people's safety at work but it can't be right for Big Ben to be silent for four years. And I hope that the Speaker, as the chairman of the House of Commons commission, will look into this urgently so that we can ensure that we can continue to hear Big Ben through those four years."
