這本書是丁丁歷險記的第三本，講述了丁丁對抗跨國販毒集團的故事。跨國販毒集團把毒品藏在了雪茄中，利用海運進行走私，在丁丁和國際刑警的聯合行動中，這個跨越埃及，阿拉伯和印度的販毒網絡終被摧毀。
毒品是一個很嚴重的國際問題。我曾在金三角旅居，附近有一間戒毒所，近距離接觸過正在戒毒和戒毒成功人士，留下深刻印象。雖然金三角的毒品種植規模比以前少了很多，但是至今無法根除，原因有很多，土地貧瘠，戰亂不斷，民族構成複雜，當地政府為獲得稅收而監管放鬆等等，但是本質的問題是，如何讓當地人民獲得較高收入來替代對罌粟的依賴。
這本書中，這個跨國販毒集團在印度和英國殖民政府沆瀣一氣，也為下一本書《藍蓮花》中，丁丁為追查販毒集團蹤跡，來到上海法租界英租界調查埋下伏筆。
