#AmericanMusic – Rap/Hip-Hop: Born in the streets of New York City in the 1970s, Rap and Hip-Hop have become staples of inner-city African- and Latin-American music culture. It all began when DJs started using turntables to 「mix」 and 「sample」 different songs at dance clubs. The MCs at those dances, who originally served as hype men, started improvising lyrics to the DJ’s beats—the first 「rappers.」 Rap and hip-hop entered the mainstream when start-up music label Def Jam brought New York's LL Cool J and Run DMC into the suburbs and across the country.
While some rappers write songs for strictly entertainment, others, notably Boogie Down Production's KRS-One, use their music to highlight social injustice. Current artists like Jay-Z, Eminem, Lil』 Wayne, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, and Drake keep rap and hip-hop one of the most vibrant and innovative genres in America. For more information:
