The AmCham Shanghai Suzhou Center held a joint session of itsGeneral Managers Network and Win in China program on July 24. Dr. Zhe XinZhang, research fellow at Charhar Institute, Mary Boyd, director of theEconomist Intelligence Unit and Jeff Astle, managing director of APCO, servedas panelists at the event. They shared their perspectives on China’s mid-yeareconomic review and gave an overview of the challenges facing business leaders,as well as possible solutions. Jane Yang, chief representative at the AmCham ShanghaiSuzhou Center and Chris Miller, business advisory services manager at theUS-China Business Council moderated the discussion.

Dr. Zhang delivered a speech on the impacts of the pandemic on China’s ability to reach its 2021 targets. He gave a historic review of China’s path towards being a moderately prosperous society and pointed out why the widespread development of soft skills has remained one of China’s goals. Boyd shared her thoughts on what China has done differently in recent years and what implications this may have for China business operations. She also discussed China’s investment ambitions and economic recovery shape. Jeff noted the importance of China’s future policies, particularly their impact on foreign enterprises. He emphasized how business confidence could be shaped by domestic policies and regulations.
The speakers then discussed the major risks in China’seconomy and the policy goals business leaders expect. They also touched on theimpact of policy changes on foreign investment in China and how the US’sanctions against Hong Kong could influence foreign companiesoperating in the region. The event ended with a Q&A session.
