About this Article: A modest departure from health topics. Today's article is about a campaign to raise funds for the children that lost a parent to the coronavirus. Concurrently, it's also a tribute to the heroes who risked their lives to protect ours. At the bottom is a pair of exclusive stories from the front-lines by two of my student Head Nurses.

Helpless, doesn't express my emotional state I felt during the lockdown of the coronavirus. Watching CGTN tabulate the daily increases in infections and deaths was almost surrealistic, as I stared outside my balcony looking over the empty streets of Houhai, SZ. What could I do? How could I help? Sure, some braved the outdoors, even some without masks, unaware of China’s restrictions. I too ventured out taking lonely walks and often sitting in large empty dining rooms hoping to help the proprietors with my humble patronage. Early on I predicted the virus would kill more businesses than people; a grim reality now just hitting home.

Being in Shenzhen, was like a movie scene; dark, grey, empty, filled with whispers of uncertainty about the virus. I can't keep up with the overwhelming media hype. People are beyond scared. Volumes of WeChat conversations, news articles, anger, and fake news. Hard to know which side is right. And yet, buried in all this noise, there have been thousands of people quietly being cared for by 42,000 medics. Desperately trying various remedies, some working, some don’t. Over 4600 people died. Many of them had children. It is for this reason I launched this 「Tribute to Heroes」 campaign.
回想起疫情期間在深圳的經歷就像經歷了電影裡的場景，一片灰暗，到處充滿了關於病毒的不確定的討論，內心非常不安。我跟不上鋪天蓋地的媒體宣傳。人們非常害怕。大量的微信對話、新聞文章、憤怒和假新聞。難以確定知道哪一方是對的。然而，在一片嘈雜聲中，仍有成千上萬的人被42000名醫護人員默默地照顧著。他（她）們拼命嘗試各種補救方法，有些有效，有些無效。病毒導致超過4600人死亡。他們中的許多人都有孩子。正是因為這個原因，我發起了這個「向英雄致敬」的活動。
Who are the Children? 這些孩子是誰？
It’s been hard for me to gather factual statistics on the number of orphaned children due to the coronavirus. I saw media stories on CGTN and articles of heart-breaking situations of children losing their parents, some of whom were children of nurses and doctors! Surely somebody was doing something to help them? Some nurses took it upon themselves to care for those 『leave behinds』. It was an easy decision for me, but I had to make a reasonable guess on the numbers based on culture and ages of the deaths of the people. Assuming that approximately 70% of the deaths were over 60 years old, that would become about 3200 people. And if you assume half of them had children, that would mean about 1600 people lost a parent. On the other hand, if 30% were under 60, then their kids would be much younger. So, I’m going to make a broad assumption that 1600 kids lost a parent. I haven’t officially reached out to any charity, or hospital, but for the people that know me, I keep my word and plan to investigate reputable organizations that have direct knowledge of these kids.

Who are the Heroes? 誰是英雄？
I teach medical English to about 300 doctors and nurses in China. For several weeks, on a daily basis, I』ve been reciting medical terminology for free, in the hopes they can develop their skills for new purposes. In this process, I』ve heard from many of them, several who worked in Wuhan, describe their ordeals during this virus. Often moved to tears, I wished I could be there for more than moral support. They recounted stories of colleagues』 deaths, and the hardship they endured, the difficulty watching people die, one after the other. Of course, there were many wonderful stories, people in their 90s walking out of the hospital. But through all their accounts, I knew they had been there for selfless reasons. Ignoring their own safety, and ignoring their family’s pleas, donnng space suits for 10-12 hour shifts, often in agonizing conditions. Who does that?? It makes me cry for them. These are our heroes!!

A friend of mine works for Wollet Jewellery. The owner and I met one day to discuss an idea I had to help the kids. I talked with a few Chinese friends, all of whom showed excited interest to help me champion this cause. We designed some bracelets, and decided on a plate moniker - 致敬逆行者 – literally means 『tribute to retrograde』, which is a famous Chinese expression that is a tribute to the heroes that go against the norm; people that go into a fire while everyone else runs out. I’m sure everyone has different opinions about the validity of this campaign. There is no reason to be cynical. Medical Student Accounts of the Coronavirus 我的醫科學生與冠狀病毒的故事And now, from my medical students, I want to share a couple personal stories from the 『trenches』. These happen to both be head nurses that worked in Wuhan during the crisis, one male and one female. 到了駐地，搬運幾十箱防護物資排隊上樓，全面消毒好物資、個人及房間後，已是凌晨三點，顧不得洗漱，疲憊不堪，和衣而睡。第二天一早，我們結隊去參觀將接手的醫院—華中科技大學同濟醫院光谷方艙醫院。醫院共845張床位，由福建隊、海南隊、山西隊、中日友好醫院與陝西隊共同合作，而陝西隊管理16-20艙五個艙位，227張床。看著偌大的方艙裡一排排密密麻麻的床位、被褥和生活用品，我看到了無硝煙的戰爭已正式拉開帷幕。牆上有醒目的「武漢加油，中國加油」，和「春暖花開時，相約暖陽下」，還有上千個小朋友貼在床頭的「武漢加油」的美術作品，不禁使我感動。我們更應該成為孩子的榜樣，打敗怪獸，凱旋而歸！參觀完我們入有三室、出有七室的穿脫防護服的地方，我暗暗下定決心，要想戰疫成功，每天必須猶如士兵練槍法嚴格訓練穿脫防護服。

二、臨危受命，帶領團隊共同抗疫我臨危受命，被任命為陝西第三批援鄂醫療隊副總護士長。一切百廢待興，除了床已就緒，一切管理框架、制度、流程均無。由於第一批先接手70多位患者，第二批80多位患者，任務緊急。我立即分配護理人員，先調動第一組衝在前線。僅兩天，艙內人員已收滿156人。我優化分組所有人員，建立層層管理、並且層層質控的框架，迅速建立一系列規章制度以及流程，親自與護士長們和組員們探討來改進方案。除有一部分為機動人員，保障工作的隨時應接，護理團隊共分成五組，分設五位護士長負責每組工作。每組有12位護士，分別各分為兩小組，並設小組長；各小組各設有一位感控員，負責全程監督本組感控工作。每天每班工作的落實及不足的反饋，按照組長-護士長-總護士長的結構層層上報。我們分析匯總後，上報領隊再上報方艙醫院，以求改進，同時下達組內討論，再匯總分析，制定新的改進方案。為做到安全防控，我與正總護士長每2-3天召開一次護士長視頻例會，層層下達整改措施和接受整改後的再反饋。問題逐漸從開始的物資缺乏及供應流程的中斷、工作起來的千頭萬緒、無從下手到方艙各環節與護理工作的良好對接；從藥品、物品的不能足夠供給、患者的無數要求、護理人員緊急上崗後防護技術的不自信到最後的穿脫熟練、患者得滿足、讚美和感激。僅僅一周， 我整頓並制定了一系列規章制度和流程，每天排好班次，隊員們能按部就班的穩步投入抗疫工作。
