Did You Know?
Impregnableis one of the many English words that bear a French ancestry, thanks to the Norman conquest of England in 1066. It derives from the Middle French verb prendre, which means "to take or capture." Combining prendre with various prefixes has given our language many other words, too, including surprise, reprise, and enterprise. Remarkably, impregnable has a different origin from the similar-looking word pregnant; that word comes from a different Latin word, praegnas, meaning "carrying a fetus."
多虧了1066年諾曼對英格蘭的徵服,Impregnable「堅不可摧」是擁有法國血統的眾多英語單詞之一。它源於中古法語動詞prendre,意為「to take or capture「奪取或捕獲」」。將prendre與多種前綴組合使用也給我們的語言提供了許多其他詞,包括surprise「驚喜」,reprise「重現」和enterprise「勤奮」。值得注意的是 impregnable 與看似相近的 pregnant 詞源是不同。這個詞來自另一個拉丁詞praegnas,意思是「carrying a fetus「攜帶胎兒」」。
