上周比爾·蓋茨在自己的博客中發布了對94歲父親威廉·蓋茨的悼念文章。9月14日，威廉·蓋茨因阿爾茨海默症去世。在悼文中，比爾·蓋茨說：「我知道很多人都仰望他們的父親，我也是。」
比爾·蓋茨曾經回憶，他小時候不太合群，只有一個愛好，就是讀書。他的父親威廉·蓋茨是一名成功的律師，雖然工作很忙，但仍然會惦記著不停給他買書，母親則會陪伴兒子閱讀。父親鼓勵他多走出去嘗試不同的活動，和他在餐桌上討論包羅萬象的話題，這都影響了蓋茨的求知慾。
比爾·蓋茨從童年開始的閱讀習慣保持了終身。他一年大約要讀50本書，還喜歡分享自己在忙碌工作中的讀書技巧。從2010年開始，蓋茨都會在自己的博客公布推薦書單，後來逐漸固定為每年的暑假和聖誕節發布兩次推薦書單，今年5月也按時公布了暑期書單。
我們整理了十年來比爾·蓋茨推薦的160多種圖書，並按照主題進行了分類。從這份蓋茨書單中可以看出，他一直關心科學技術和創新，關心公共衛生問題，業餘愛好則是網球——他推薦了網球明星的傳記和網球專欄的文集。2013年前，他非常關注能源問題，2014年則對亞洲經濟產生了興趣。他還推薦了自己父親寫的書——《蓋茨是這樣培養的》，這本看起來像勵志讀物的書揭示了當年那個不善交際，甚至看起來呆呆的小男孩，是如何通過閱讀和思考，發揮出自己的天賦。
