通常情況下，between表一個物體在兩者之間，among表一個物體在三者或三者以上的中間，或者多個物體在其餘更多物體中間。
例1：a little box between two big ones
兩個大盒子間的小盒子（如圖1和圖2）
例2：a ball among many boxes
很多盒子間的一個球（如圖3）
three balls among boxes
盒子間的三個球（如圖4）
注意：其實between也可以用於「三者或三者以上」，強調其中每兩者之間的相互關係。

各國人民之間的友好關係
Intelligence varies between people
人與人的智商有差異。

一條林間小路（between強調從很多「兩棵樹」之間穿過）

注意：
1.among的基本義和引申義與between非常相似，只有文章一開始的一點兒差別。不再贅述。
2.另外一些表「之間，中間」的介詞比較少見，我們只知道意思即可，不需過多辨析。比如，among的書面語among(st)≈amid(st)≈ in the mid(st) of；in between≈between；in the middle of強調正中間。
