定冠詞the用於名詞前，表示某個人或某些特指的人或物。他與指示代詞this，that，these，those同源，以為「這個、那個、這些、哪些」。
注意：定冠詞the修飾以元音音素開頭的名詞時讀[i]，修飾以輔音音素開頭的名詞讀[]。
1.定冠詞的用法：
（1）用於特指，表示特定的或上文提及到的人或事物
The film we saw yesterday evening was about the Second World War.
昨晚我們看的那場電影是關於第二次世界大戰的。
（2）指世界上獨一無二的事物
the Great Wall 長城 the moon 月亮
（3）用於江、河、海、洋等名稱之前或由普通名詞構成的專有名詞前
the Yangtze River 長江 the Yellow River 黃河
the South Sea 南海 the Atlantic Ocean 大西洋
（4）用於山脈、島嶼、海峽、沙漠、國家等專有名詞之前
the Himalayas 喜馬拉雅山脈 the Hawaiian Islands 夏威夷群島
the United States 美國 the United Nations 聯合國
（5）用於歷史時期、歷史事件之前
the Middle Ages 中世紀 the Wenchuan Earthquake 汶川地震
（6）用於團體、組織機構的名稱之前
the Red Cross 紅十字會
（7）用於形容詞、副詞的最高級之前
Shanghai is one of the biggest cities in China.
上海市中國最大的城市之一。
（8）用於可數名詞的單數之前，表示一類人或事物
You should learn to use the computer. 你應該學會使用電腦。
（9）用於表示民族或國籍的形容詞之前，表示全體
The Chinese people are very friendly. 中國人民非常友善。
（10）用於某些形容詞、分詞之前，表示一類人或事物

（11）用於序數詞之前

（12）用於樂器的名稱之前

（13）用于姓氏複數之前

（19）用於表示階級、基團等整體的名詞之前
the people 人民 the public 公眾
（20）可數名詞的單數形式，用作抽象意義時，使用定冠詞
pleasant to the eye 賞心悅目
（21）用於the only，the same等表達

2.定冠詞的位置
定冠詞the通常位於名詞或名詞修飾語之前，但當名詞前有all, both, double, half, twice, three times等倍數詞修飾時，定冠詞需放在這些名詞後面、名詞的前面。
