英語作文試題一般要求字數在120-150字左右，段落一般為三段，因而有「三段論」一說。
所謂「三段論」即全文分為三個自然段。
第一段：擺事實（現象）、提觀點（論點或問題），最好將題目要求中的第一個要點（一般為提出問題或觀點）作為首段的內容之一。
第二段：剖析現象、分析論點，這也是全文的主體部分。
第三段：結論段，這一段的主要任務是為全文做一個結論性的終結，讓文章顯得完整和連貫。
