Switzerland: Basel SBB Railway Station
Railway Services Available: National and international services mostly for Swiss and French trains
Tram Connections: Tram Lines 1, 2, 8, 10, and 11 to Bahnhof SBB
Basel is in a rather special part of Switzerland, with the city close to Germany and France. This is why it is home to two big stations, both called Basel: one for Swiss and French trains (known mainly as Basel SBB) and the other for German trains (known as Basel Badischer Bahnhof station). We'll be taking a look at Basel SBB station today (with the current-day building a 1907 creation).
Basel SBB is easy to spot as a Swiss station - because the Central Station (which is also what it is known by, especially in earlier years) sports a Swiss flag on top of the building. In front of Basel SBB is a huge tram hub, where passengers come and go, to and from the station.
Most Swiss and a number of international services use the main part of the station, where Platforms 5-17 are at, but some suburban services also use "lesser-numbered" platforms, such as Platforms 1 and 2. National services within Switzerland run to many destinations, including Chur in eastern Switzerland and even Lugano in Ticino, southern Switzerland. Of course, plenty of trains also run to Zurich, but there are also a number that run to the Jura, or northwestern Switzerland. International regulars here include the ICE to / from Germany, and the TGV to / from France, amongst others.
Platforms 30 to 35, however, are in the French part of the station (in essence the station of Basel / Bale SNCF), which has "felt less and less French" over the years. First, ticketing services from SNCF, or the French Railways, have dwindled to the extent their only visible presence, amongst others, are the ticket machines and validators; second, passport control, previously required for entry to these platforms, have been done away with now that Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area. (However, it still operates a different customs area.) The waiting hall, though, is still well-preserved.
Like Zurich Main Station, Basel SBB station is also on what is in essence federal territory, which means that the rules banning much of Sunday trading do not apply here. Shops continue to remain open to a satisfied clientele over Sunday - with most coming in to get things, for a ride, or both.
