Tables 12.2 and12.3 outline a daily practice session. Table 12.2 shows the time frame andresponsibilities of the players involved in drills, these drills take place inthe basic skills area. Pitchers are involved in pitcher drills from 3:00 to3:10. During this period., they practice throws to each base, covering first,squeeze plays(短打), wild-pitch(暴投) drills, and holding runners on. From 3:10to 3:50, they learn how to cover bunt, steal, rundown., and batted-ball(任意一球) situations with a runner on first.

Table 12.3outlines the responsibilities of all pitchers and players involved in livepitching and hitting. This takes place in the designated pitching and hittingarea. In the outlineshown, the time frame of each sequence is in the left-hand column. Each sessiondesignates an inning. The first inning begins at 4:00 and runs to 4:08. Thesecond inning runs from 4:08 to 4:16 and so on until the required innings havebeen fulfilled. The pitchers (P) designated for assignment are placed. at thetop of the inning, followed by the number of pitches for that particularinning. Higgins and Burlingame throw 15 pitches the first inning. Brenner andDillon throw 15 pitches the second inning. Burlingame and Higgins throw another15 pitches the third inning. This continues until all pitchers have completedtheir long throwing. On this day, Higgins and Burlingame will throw 90 pitchesover six innings.

The catcher (C)should be labeled under or next to the pitcher. During the first inning,Kelliher catches Higgirls, and Ender catches Burlingame.

Providing Live Pitching Opportunities

A pitcher needsthe chance to become both mentally and physically prepared for his game-dayduties. Throwing to a batter in a game is completely different from throwing toa catcher in practice. By providing live pitching situations, you give your pitchersa chance to develop mechanics, endurance, confidence in throwing strikes, andmastery of the strike zone. Table 12.4 provides an example of a pitcher'sweekly practice schedule.

Four Productive Pitching Drills

Drill 1: Fielding bunted balls. Pitchersfield bunts and throw to each base. The first baseman and the third basemanmake the call on who fields the ball. The catcher makes the call on where theball is thrown.

Our philosophy concurs and advisesthe hitter to look at the ball, develop a level shoulder-to-shoulder swing, rotatethe hips, and gain momentum toward the pitcher.

When working withhitters, we aim to develop a simple hitting routine that enables hitters togain quickness with the bat and master the strike zone. The routine isscheduled to give hitters a chance to improve hand quickness through a numberof mandatory repetitions and work on eliminating any problems that slow theswing. The routine also provides live hitting opportunities so hitters canmaster the strike zone and develop mission hitting.

In developinghitters indoors, we schedule two types of hitting-batting practice and livehitting. In batting practice drills, hitters take 250 swings through heavy-batdrills, batting-tee drills, toss-and-hit drills, and half-cage hitting.' We use game-situation live hitting to maximizethe productivity of our hitting approach.

Mission Hitting

In developing teamoffense philosophy, we keep things simple. We believe the best guide to followis mission hitting. For every at bat, the hitter has a challenge and a mission.That mission may be to get on base, to move a runner, or to drive in a runner.If no one is on base, the hitter must try to get on. If a runner is on base,the hitter must find a way of advancing him and keeping the inning going, If arunner is in scoring position, the hitter must find a way to drive the runnerhome or at least extend the inning so someone else can drive him home.

Mastering the Strike Zone

As a hitter, oneof the toughest mental flaws to overcome is swinging at balls out of the strikezone or chasing pitches that are hard to drive. As a coach, we seek to developa routine that makes hitting good pitches automatic. The easiest ways to masterthe strike zone is through simulated game situations. This is how hitters learnto get good pitches to hit for each mission.

Players practicethese four factors as they develop the correct swing through a number ofmandatory repetitions. six Heavy-Bat Drills

We believe thatheavy-bat drills help to get quick with the bat. The heavy-bat routine is a setof drills designed to strengthen and quicken the wrists while developing goodhitting mechanics. There are six drills, each consisting of 10 repetitions.

Drill 1: Hipdrill. Holding the bat behind his back, in the small of the back, the hitterassumes his stance. Inthe finished position, the barrel of the bat should be at the point of contact,

Drill 2: Ax Drill 1. With the bat in both hands and arms extended at chin height, the hitterraises the bat over his head, touches his backside, and brings the bat back tothe starting point, as though he is chopping wood.

Drill 3: Ax Drill 2.With the bat in both hands and arms extended at chin height, the hitter moveshis wrists up and down, taking the bat from the starting point and, moving hiswrists only, bringing it to his hitting shoulder and then back to the startingpoint.

Drill 4: Shoulder,Contact, Shoulder. Assuming his stance, the batter places his hands at thestarting point of the swing. The bat is even with his back shoulder, and hishands are even with the armpit and back knee. The hitter gains momentum in theplane of the swing, going from the back shoulder to the contact point, witharms extended. He finishes the swing, emphasizing the look at the ball, theshift of weight to the front knee, and rotation of the back heel and hips.

Drill5: Top-Hand Drill. This drill is performed the same way as the shoulder-to-shoulder drill. except the player uses only the top hand. This drill developes coordination of the top hand in rotation with the hips and back heel. The hitter then performs this drill using the bottom hand pulling the bat shoulder to shoulder.

The hitter strides to thesimulated pitch and practices a full swing, ending with the bat against hisfront shoulder. The emphasis of this drill is on driving the top hand and pulling the bottom hand simultaneously.
