The writer found that Wenchang people play volleyball regardless of time or places, but can suit in any conditions. There are all kinds of volleyball courts everywhere. Space between two buildings can also become a practice field. Compared with football and basketball, why volleyball is so popular in Wenchang?
The writer interviewed the older generation of Wenchang people, Ms. Han Guijin, a resident of Luodou Town, Wenchang, said: "Compared with other cities and counties, in the past the farming conditions in Wenchang were not good, and it was difficult for everyone to maintain their livelihoods. Moreover, Wenchang people live by the sea, and mostly work in the area of shallow sea. There is not much land for them to do farm work after fishing period. In this case, there will be plenty of leisure time. At that time, the countryside was quite blocked. Natives would like to play the volleyball under the coconut tree. Boys and girls enjoyed this game as the mixed doubles. .
Ms. Han also told writer that when she was a child, her living conditions were very difficult, but Wenchang people did not forget to seek the joy of life. They all said "Half of the Hainan's coconut yielded from Wenchang ". Because of the large amount of coconut yield, Wenchang people like to play coconut around as a game, just like the volleyball. At that time, everyone would kill their time in many ways, wandering around like a achivalrous man. Although volleyball began to be popular in Wenchang schools quite early, at that time most of students were too poor to go to schools. At the very beginning, Ms Han thought that volleyball was just like any other balls, which she had heard of but never ever seen or touched any of them. Until later, when a large number of overseas Chinese returned to the village to settle down, they brought back volleyball, which was much lighter than coconut. Everyone felt very novel and set off a "volleyball" upsurge. When Wenchang people play volleyball, two English words "outside" and "ball" were usually mentioned . This phenomenon is estimated that it should be related to overseas Chinese.
The writer also learned that because of poverty, it was impossible for Wenchang people to buy volleyball to play in the village. Wenchang people who always seek joy amidst hard times would never give in. It is known that Wenchang coconut trees grow into forest. Some people thought of replacing volleyball with leaf balls woven made from coconut leaves. But the weight of such balls was too light. They also thought of a way to stuff coconut slices and other sundries into leaf balls. It was so called, a qualified simple "volleyball".
Ms. Han also said that the past volleyball court was very easy to build. A fishing net, two ropes were as fully prepared. Compared with other ball games, Wenchang's ecological environment is easier to meet the requirements of volleyball courts, and volleyball has become Wenchang people's "darling". After the students finished their homework, they found an open sandy land, hung up the net on two coconut trees and drew a line on the ground with their feet, so that they could come to a volleyball match.
