1.關於動詞dare的用法，語法書上一般都有詳細說明。從理論上講，dare有下面兩種用法：
①象情態助動詞：第三人稱單數不加s，問句和否定句不用do，後邊接不帶to的動詞不定式。
Darehe tell them what he knows?他敢告訴他們他所知道的情況？
②象普通動詞一樣，第三人稱單數要加-問句和否定句用do，後邊接帶to的動詞不定式。
I shall be surprised if he daresto tell them what he know.要是他敢於對他們講他所知道的情況，我一定會感到吃驚的。
Do I dareto ask her?我敢問她嗎?
2.實際上，在現代英語中dare不很常用。在非正式文體中(例如日常會話)，我們經常用其它表達法，如 not to be afraid，或not to have the courage to等。象 He daresto say what he thinks這樣的話是可以說的，但是大多數人卻會說： He's not afraid to say what he thinks.
3.在某些情況下，在非正式文體中，dare一詞還是常用的：
①在英國英語中， daren't [dεnt]這種否定形式是常見的(即情態助動詞的各種形式：單數第三人稱不加「，否定和疑問句，不用do，後接不帶to的動詞不定式)。
I daren'task her— will you do it for me?我不收向她一一你我問問好嗎?
She daren'ttell the boss because she doesn't want to make trouble.她不敢告訴老闆，因為她不想惹是生非。
②I dare you to+動詞不定式這種說法，是小孩子用來激對方去做使人害怕的事情。
I dareyou to ride your bike through the gate with no hands. 我量你不敢雙手撒把騎著自行車通過大門。
③ You dare！和Don' t you dare！人們(比如作母親的)常常用這樣的話來叫別人不要去做不該做的事。
"Mmmy， can I draw a picture on the wall?「媽媽、我可以在牆上畫幅畫兒嗎?」
「You dare!」「你敢！」
④I dare say的意思是「也許」。
I daresay it'll rain soon.天也許很快要下雨了。
⑤How dare you?是在表示憤慨時使用的驚嘆句。
How dareyou? Take your hands off me at once.放肆！馬上放開我。
