到了11日，該帳號還沒發布一條視頻，但粉絲量就突破了1500萬。
頁面顯示，該帳號經過抖音認證，認證信息有三個，分別是共和國勳章獲得者、雜交水稻之父、青島海水稻研究發展中心主任。
Renowned agronomist Yuan Longping, known as the "father of hybrid rice", joined the short-video app Douyin over the weekend, attracting more than 15 million followers even before publishing any post.
The account "Chinese Pioneer Yuan Longping" was set up last Saturday, and has amassed a massive following of 15.3 million people as of Monday noon.

開心之餘，還有不少網友開始關心袁隆平爺爺啥時候發抖音。

隨著該帳號的粉絲增長和沉默不言，沒多久帳號的真實性就遭到了質疑。
1月11日下午17：25，新華視點在其官方微博發布「新華微評」：經核實，袁老目前正在海南三亞南繁基地科研攻關；對於該抖音號，袁老表示自己並不知情，但是他對網友的熱情表示感謝。據悉，該抖音帳號是由「某公司」註冊的。
新華社就此事評論說：袁老忙於實驗，你卻去蹭熱點，拿人們對袁老的崇敬、對科學精神的崇尚去吸粉、引流，合適嗎？袁老時間何其寶貴，讓他分心分神更不合適。
However, the credibility of this account soon came under question as the media reported Yuan didn't know about opening a Douyin account of his own. 緊接著，當天下午18：14，抖音通過新浪微博官方帳號發布說明，就袁隆平院士抖音官方帳號「袁隆平中華拓荒人」入駐過程進行了說明，稱2020年8月，青島海水稻研究發展中心與抖音取得聯繫，就袁隆平院士入駐抖音、今日頭條、西瓜視頻，科普「三農」知識等方面合作進行多次溝通。2020年10月，該中心工作人員向抖音提供了袁隆平授權函和袁隆平本人身份證信息等認證必需資料，完成實名認證。抖音稱，認證後，原計劃2021年1月12日，該帳號將在今日頭條、抖音、西瓜視頻平臺發布首條視頻，於1月15日第五屆國際海水稻論壇上開啟首場直播，並籤約加入字節跳動公益「三農合伙人」項目。
抖音表示，對袁隆平院士充滿敬意，該帳號的後續處理，將完全尊重院士及其相關工作團隊的意見。
In response to the questions posed by the media, Douyin made an official statement on Weibo later in the evening, clarifying the reliability of the account. It said the Qingdao Sea Rice Research and Development Center, which is led by Yuan Longping, contacted Douyin in August, 2020 about having Yuan join Douyin, Toutiao and Xigua Video, and provided the platform with necessary materials for authentication, including Yuan's ID and a letter of authorization. Douyin said the follow-up processing of this account will fully respect the opinions of Yuan and his team.
據澎湃新聞報導，1月12日，開通「袁隆平中華拓荒人」抖音號的青島海水稻研究發展中心相關負責人告訴澎湃新聞，這個抖音帳號肯定會保留，在1月15日第五屆國際海水稻論壇上開啟首場直播的計劃目前也沒有變化。但青島海水稻研究發展中心相關負責人並未解釋之前出現烏龍事件的原因，也沒有透露目前是否已經和袁隆平溝通完成。
不過，抖音平臺上目前已搜索不到「袁隆平中華拓荒人」這一帳號。
據澎湃新聞報導，抖音方面對此回應稱，因袁隆平院士的帳號存在爭議，抖音先做封禁處理。
1月12日，澎湃新聞記者致電青島海水稻研究發展中心有限公司相關工作人員，該工作人員表示對此事不再做回復。
雖然袁老將來是否會正式入駐抖音尚未可知，但不少網友表示，無論如何，他們會尊重袁老、守護袁老。也希望這件事不會對袁老造成困擾，讓他能夠繼續安心地從事科研工作。
