雙語丨音位學-音位規則 Phonological rules in phonology

一、Assimilation rule 同化規則

An assimilation rule is a phonological rule that is to describe the effect of phonetic context or situation on a particular phone.

同化規則是一種音位規則,用來描述語音語境或語音環境對特定音子的影響。

The assimilation rule assimilates one segment to another by "copying"a feature of a sequential phoneme, thus making the two phones more similar.

同化規則通過「複製」一個序列音位的一個特徵 來將一個音段與另一個音段進行同化,從而使兩個音子更加相似。

This rule accounts for the varying pronunciation of the nasal [n] that occurs within a word.

這條規則解釋了鼻音[n]出現在一個單詞中的不同發音。

The rule is that within a word the nasal consonant [n] assumes the same place of articulation as the following consonant.

規則是,在一個單詞中,鼻輔音[n]假設與下面的輔音處於相同的發音部位。

The negative prefix "in-" serves as a good example.

否定前綴「in-」就是一個很好的例子。

It may be pronounced as [in], [i] or [im]when occurring in different phonetic contexts, e. g. indiscrete [indiskri:t ] (alveolar), ink [ik] (velar), input [imput](bilabial).

它可能發音發作[in], [i] or [im] 當出現在不同的語音環境中,例如,indiscrete [indiskri:t ] (齒齦音), ink [ik] (軟顎音), input [imput](雙唇音).

二、 Deletion rule 省略規則

The deletion rule in phonology concerns the relation between letters and sounds within the phonetic condition.

音位學中的省略規則是關於在語音條件下字母與聲音之間的關係。

The deletion rule tells us when a sound is to be deleted although it is orthographically represented.

省略規則它告訴我們什麼時候一個語音儘管在拼寫中存在,但在發音時卻可以省略。

While the letter「g"is mute in「sign", 「design" and「paradigm",

雖然「sign」、「design」和「paradigm」中的字母「g」是不發音的,

it is pronounced in their corresponding derivatives "signature", "designation" and "paradigmatic".

但它在其相應的派生詞"signature", "designation" and "paradigmatic"中發音。

The rule then can be stated as: delete a [g] when it occurs before a final nasal consonant.

規則可以這樣說:如果一個[g]出現在最後一個鼻輔音之前,就省略它。

This accounts for some of the seeming irregularities of the English spelling.

這就解釋了英語拼寫中一些看似不規則的地方。

三、Sequential rules 序列規則

Sequential rules state the possible combination of phonemes and the constraint over such a combination for a language.

序列規則說明音位的可能組合,以及語言對這種組合的約束。

With this sort of linguistic knowledge which is stated in phonology as a phonological rule,

a string of phonemes can be judged whether it is a word or a possible word for a language.

用這樣的語言知識,它在音位學中作為一個音位規則被闡述,對於一個語言,一串音位可以被判斷它是一個詞或一個可能的詞。

For example, the native speaker of English can, without question, divide the following list into two groups:the group of English and the group of non-English words.

例如,以英語為母語的人可以毫無疑問地把下面的單詞分為兩組:英語單詞和非英語單詞。

(1)creck crick

(2)zbread bread

(3)splash zsplash

(4)block blokc

Creck and crick are both judged as English words and so are they indeed, though creck is not a real English word.

Creck和crick都被判斷是英語單詞,它們確實也是,儘管Creck不是一個真正的英語單詞。

It does not really exist in the language, but it is judged as a possible word of the language.

它並不真正存在於語言中,但它被判斷為語言中可能存在的一個詞。

The existence of possible words proves the existence of sequential rule that is the part of our phonological knowledge.

可能單詞的存在證明了序列規則的存在,這是我們語位學知識的一部分。

Such a rule states what combinations of phonemes are allowed for a language.

這樣的規則規定了一種語言允許什麼樣的音位組合。

Zbread and zsplash are both judged as non-English words and neither are they indeed.

Zbread和zsplash都被判定為非英語單詞,它們實際上也不是。

Such a rule states what combination of phonemes is not allowed for a language.

這樣的規則規定了一種語言中什麼音位組合是不允許的。

There are many sequential rules in English.

英語中有許多序列規則。

For example, if a word begins with a [l], then the next sound must be a vowel

例如,如果一個單詞以[l]開頭,那麼下一個音必須是元音

That is why [lkik] and [ikbl] are impossible combinations in English.

這就是為什麼在英語中[lkik]和[ikbl]是不可能的組合。

They have violated the restrictions on the sequencing of phonemes.

它們違反了音位序列的限制。

Also, if three consonants should cluster together at the beginning of a word, the combination should obey the following three rules:

同時,在一個單詞的開頭,如果三個輔音連在一起,組合應該遵循以下三條規則:

(1)The first phoneme must be /s/;第一個音位必須是/s/;

(2)The second phoneme must be /p/,/t/or/k/;第二個音位必須是/p/,/t/或/k/;

(3)The third phoneme must be /1/,/r/ or /w/.第三個音位必須是/1/,/r/或/w/。

This is why all words beginning with a combination of three consonants in English are words like spring [spri], strict [strikt], square [skwe], splendid [splendid], scream [skri: m], etc.

這就是為什麼英語中所有以三個輔音開頭的單詞都是像這樣的單詞spring [spri], strict [strikt], square [skwe], splendid [splendid], scream [skri: m],等。

But, we must be aware that the rules governing the phonological patterning are language specific.

但是,我們必須意識到支配音位學模式的這些規則是語言特有的。

What is not permissible in English might be permissible in another language, and vice versa.

英語中不允許的,在另一種語言中可能是允許的,反之亦然。

  • 雙語丨語音學和音位學的使用 uses of phonetics and phonology
There is still a lot to learn in phonetics and phonology.在語音學和音位學方面還有很多東西要學。From the little we have discussed here we can see that phonetics and phonology are very useful in linguistics and language teaching.
  • 雙語丨語音學phonetics與音位學phonology的區別
Both phonetics and phonology are concerned with speech.語音學和音位學都是對語音的研究。音位學涉及對語音的更抽象的描述,並試圖描述語音模式的規律。So, in this sense, phonology is language-specific. It is the study of how sounds are organized and used in natural languages.
  • 雙語丨音位學-最小對立體Minimal pairs in phonology
measure them, we can see that each sound is unique in terms of pitch, loudness and length as well as quality,如果我們用儀器來測量它們,我們可以看到每一個聲音在音高,響度、音長和音質方面都是獨一無二的,But in phonology
  • 語音學中「音位」、「音素」有什麼區別
    語音學裡有音位和音素兩個概念。粗略地說,一個音位可以在不同地方中發出不同的音素。音位phoneme,指的是人類某一種語言中能夠區別意義的最小語音單位。一個音位可以有數種不同的發音,但是語言使用者心理上認定這幾種發音是等同的。
  • 雙語丨識別音位 identifying phonemes
    For example:本節的主要任務是識別音位,即判斷兩個或兩個以上的聲音是獨立的音位還是同一音位的不同音位變體。如果發現兩個音處於對比分布,則稱它們為獨立的音位。我們可以得出的結論是,這兩個聲音是兩個獨立的音位。
  • 雙語丨音位學-區別性特徵 Distinctive features in phonology
區別性特徵是將一個音位與另一個音位區別開來的特徵。So distinctive features tell us how different phonemes are the same and how they differ from one another.
  • 雙語丨聲調 Tone
Although the word tone has a very wide range of meanings and usages in ordinary language, its meaning in phonetics and phonology is quite restricted:

Phonemes,phones,allophones
音子,在一門語言中代表一個音位並且不能 通過用該組中的任一個代替另一個來改變單詞的意思,這種音子稱為音位變體。區分音位和音位變體的習慣做法是把音位放在斜槓//中,而把音位變體放在中方括號[]中。The term 「allophone" is used only when these phones are regarded as realizations of one particular phoneme.
