Living abroad, during the COVID pandemic, Netflix was a huge part of my life outside of work--aside from food, sleep and the occasional sobbing for no reason. Frankly, I was that on the edge of depression and had no motivation whatsoever. It definitely wasn't healthy, but what can I do? Nothing but to deal with it, for those who have to stay abroad for reasons such as study, work and visa applications...
For me, it was 3,4,5,6 months after graduation that I still couldn't return home which led to the lowest point of my summer, while the majority of my friends had either flown back to China or had to quarantine with their family or partner.
I had to call the mental health hotline a few times since I was living alone and didn't want to speak tearfully every time I call my parents on WeChat. It was a tough while, and I remember wanting to hug someone so badly other than my stuffed animal from IKEA's kids' section.
I hope you are doing okay, life isn't always going to be easy but do believe that you are tougher than you might think you are, wherever you might be right now. If I had anything else to share besides my vulnerability, it would be this list of shows and stand-ups that comforted my lonely heart.

It takes advantage of the genre comedy, cleverly brings contemporary social issues into the discussion. Each character is distinct, and their perspectives and stories allow me to see further than the social circles that I currently live in.

When your objective of learning English goes beyond getting good grades on tests or writing a thesis, such as to socialize with locals build your personal charisma, consider watching stand-up comedies without Chinese subtitles. Having a sense of humour usually make people appear more approachable and less dull.
Although the speed of their talk and some jokes might be hard to follow, give it a try, you may be surprised to find out how funny it is without the awkward translation. Sometimes humour just doesn’t translate! And some even argue that stand-ups shouldn’t be read into literally as it is merely a performance; once taken out the context, some words would be inconsiderate.
