當地時間12月5日，美國《時代周刊》在官方推特上公布了最新一期雜誌封面。
封面上，白底黑字的2020被畫上了一個紅叉，並附言「這是最糟糕的一年」(THE WORST YEAR EVER)。
《時代周刊》雜誌將2020年定義為「最糟糕的一年」，一方面指的是新冠肺炎疫情蔓延，另一方面也針對美國大選。
在這期雜誌中，入圍2015年普利茲影評獎的Stephanie Zacharek寫道：

This is the story of a year you'll never want to revisit.
她認為縱然在美國歷史上、世界歷史上都有過更糟糕的年份，但大多數活在今天的我們都沒有經歷過那樣的歲月。
只有活到100歲以上的人才會記得第一次世界大戰和1918年大流感所造成的破壞;90歲左右的人才會切身感受過大蕭條造成的經濟匱乏，80多歲的人才會對二戰以及那段恐怖的過往存有記憶。

對於《時代周刊》評出的「最糟糕的一年」，很多網友並不買帳。部分網友認為，美國在全球發動戰爭，多年來對當地老百姓帶來的災難和絕望不亞於美國的今天。
