YANGON -- Myanmar and Bangladesh have agreed on launching new bilateral air services in line with international air transport developments, local media reported Thursday.
The new air services agreement replacing the old one initiated in 1977 was signed between the Department of Civil Aviation of Myanmar and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism of Bangladesh recently, the New Light of Myanmar said.
The two sides also agreed on airlines designation, traffic rights between the two countries and beyond third country and airlines cooperation arrangement.
The agreement covered operation of seven flights per week of designated airlines of each country, designation of Myanmar Airways International Co.,Ltd and Air Bagan Co., Ltd as designated airlines of Myanmar and designation of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, GMG Airlines and United Airways (BG) as designated airlines of Bangladesh, it added.
Myanmar and Bangladesh have been working to reestablish direct air link to connect Yangon and Dhaka after Bangladesh airline, Biman, stopped its flight between Dhaka and Yangon before 2007 due to economic losses.
Negotiations were held over the resumption of the direct air link during visits to Myanmar by Bangladesh officials last year.
