Batting average is a statistic used to measure a batter's performance in baseball and cricket. In baseball, it represents the percentage of at-bats that result in a hit. In cricket, it shows the average number of runs scored per dismissal.

Baseball batting average is calculated by dividing the number of hits by the number of official at-bats: Batting Average = Hits ÷ At Bats. The result is typically expressed as a three-decimal number (e.g., .300).

Cricket batting average is calculated by dividing the total runs scored by the number of times the batsman was dismissed: Batting Average = Runs Scored ÷ Times Out.

In Major League Baseball: Below .250 is poor to average, .250-.275 is good to very good, .275-.300 is very good, above .300 is exceptional, and above .400 is considered legendary (practically impossible in modern baseball).

In cricket: Below 10 is poor, 10-20 is average, 20-30 is above average, 30-40 is good, 40-50 is very good, and above 50 is extraordinary. Professional players typically average between 30-50.

An at-bat is counted each time a player completes their turn at the plate, except for walks, hit by pitch, sacrifice flies, sacrifice bunts, or if the inning ends while still batting.
