A bond calculator is a financial tool that helps investors determine various bond metrics such as price, yield to maturity, and current yield. It uses mathematical formulas based on present value calculations to evaluate the fair value of a bond given its characteristics like face value, coupon rate, time to maturity, and required yield.

Current yield is calculated by dividing the annual coupon payment by the current market price of the bond. It only considers the income from coupon payments. Yield to maturity (YTM) is more comprehensive as it considers both the coupon payments and any capital gain or loss if the bond is held until maturity.

Payment frequency determines how often you receive coupon payments throughout the year. More frequent payments (like monthly vs. annual) result in slightly higher effective yields due to the compounding effect, as you can reinvest the coupon payments more frequently.

Discount: Bond price < Face value (YTM > Coupon rate)
Par: Bond price = Face value (YTM = Coupon rate)
Premium: Bond price > Face value (YTM < Coupon rate)

Our calculator uses standard financial formulas and provides results accurate to 4 decimal places. However, actual market prices may vary due to factors like liquidity, credit quality, and market conditions that aren't captured in theoretical pricing models.

This calculator is designed for fixed-rate coupon bonds with regular payment schedules. It may not be suitable for zero-coupon bonds, floating-rate bonds, or bonds with embedded options like callable or convertible bonds.

Theoretical bond prices assume perfect market conditions and may not reflect real-world factors such as: Credit risk and rating changes, Liquidity premiums, Supply and demand imbalances, Transaction costs, and Tax considerations.

Negative yields occur when the bond price is so high that the total return (including capital loss at maturity) is negative. This can happen in low interest rate environments or when bonds are viewed as safe-haven assets during economic uncertainty.
