臺灣銀幣1982年由督造官吏劉銘傳在臺北、臺南兩地建設臺灣造幣廠和臺北官銀局共同監製。1821年-1850年（清道光年間），臺灣地方政府鑄造了壽星銀餅、「大清國寶」和「官局」等式樣的銀餅。1853年(鹹豐三年)，臺灣府在臺南鑄造。「如意」和「筆寶」銀餅 。1862年（同治元年），嘉義縣鑄造了一批軍餉銀餅。
至明末清初，隨著中外貿易往來的日益頻繁，大量外國銀元流入中國，首先是在我國南方沿海地區流通，隨後再逐漸流入內地，這些銀元主要是西班牙銀元和墨西哥銀元。 各就其形以名，重六錢八分，錢而有文為重，又有"府庫"兩字，所以別洋銀也，是為臺灣自鑄銀元。」可見，臺灣較早自鑄銀元是壽星銀餅、花藍銀餅和劍稱銀餅3種。
臺灣銀幣十分珍稀，如今已是一品難求。臺灣壽星幣因鑄有很多吉祥圖案，一般人都會作為吉祥物收藏，因而市場難得一見。作為輔幣的臺灣銀毫，體積較小，難保存，易遺失，因而能留存到今天實屬不易。因此，臺灣銀幣較之其他省份鑄造的銀幣更為珍稀。
