We then lived on a farm by the middle and lower reaches of the Yangzi River. My father would go hunting when it was not so busy in the cement factory. He was still hale and hearty, skilled at coming and going among the bushes in those mountains behind our house, which showed him a not bad hunter. He either left in early afternoon and came back late evening just before dinner, or he would wait until night world news on TV, then head into the darkness with his headlight like a miner. I did not always know when he returned, but in the morning, there were sometimes one or two pheasants, hares, hog badgers displayed in the tool room. One time, it was even a muntjac, the size of a deer, placed flat on the floor as if it was sleeping with the black hole on its belly. Another time, the hare was still alive arriving at the tool room, and struggled the whole night to escape. It died before I opened the door in the morning, with its front legs still tied to the bars of the window and its butt on the pool of its own shit and urine. Its partner, shot while having dinner, did not finish the last handful of grass. My mother had to use a screwdriver to pry open its jaw and pull the green grass through its small white teeth.
Nazlı:
This is a story about the love as the narrator has experienced it in her family, the love of her parents as she observed and learned about (from the uncle) and eventually talked with her mother. It is a well-written very touching story, that made me think of Jim Harrison when I read the first paragraph. He is a brilliant mix of narrative and poetry, a master of writing about sad families (see Legends of the Fall). I appreciate how you are able to pick just the strongest examples, and write them in sentences that contain a lot of information, sentences that feel distilled.
I couldn't remember if he said anything. Unexpected and a bit confused, I left with my friends. The night street echoed our footsteps. "Laura, what happened between you and Danny boy?" Julie walked beside me, her eyes twinkling. "I don't know." I kept on walking. There was fresh cool breeze in the air. That hint of beer was fading.

Same platform, different sides, separated by a wall with arches in the middle. We were both walking towards the same direction, but on different sides. I saw him disappear and reappear in the next arch. Our gaze never broke. Part of me just wanted to run across the platform, kiss him like there was no tomorrow and ask him to take me anywhere he's going. But my feet were rooted.
Nazlı:
This is a story about a love relationship that began and ended and began again after a year. I appreciate how you use language, it is direct, clean, does not distract the reader from the story. I especially like the part when the narrator leaves the party after kissing Dan, and also the part when the two of them are at the metro station at the end of the story. In both of these moments, you make the settings take on more emotion by your writing, and the reader can feel what the characters are feeling, even though you do not say it.
In early autumn, the rain gives thin layers of sheen to his coat, his hair, and the leather shoes. I turn to the window side, where the glass is covered by the droplets and the droplets walk into lines. Not too much or too big rain here, in this high altitude area.
「Yes, it rains when you are getting closer to here. But it’s ok, I walk up from there, from the bus station.」 He talks in strong Northern China accent. But his appearance is a typical Han here, medium height, medium weight, and medium tanned redness on face underneath with yellow skin base. This is his fifth year here, it’s enough to leave a mark on his face.
Nazlı:
This is a story about two people who ended up in Tibet for reasons of their own, an engineer and the narrator who is most likely working at a café. I appreciate your ability to create quiet and emotional images, such as the five years leaving a mark on the man’s face, and everything going back to where they belong resulting in a peaceful quiet.
