《The Dot》
點
畫畫是什麼？畫畫是孩子的一種自我表達的方式，像Vashiti，狠狠地在紙上戳了一個點，來表達她的自我認知－「我不會畫畫」。
The dot裡面的老師真了不起，看著Vashiti發呆，畫不出來，她沒有主動地去教，既不教她想（建議Vashiti畫什麼），更不教她畫的技巧，也不去否定Vashiti「我不會畫畫的自我認知」，而是讓孩子隨意地去自我表白。白紙在她的眼裡是「雪暴中的北極熊」，孩子表達生氣的一個點她也很珍視，這種珍視不是虛偽的去讚美孩子的畫，而是來源於她對人性的深刻認識，這個點很真實－它真實、準確地表達了孩子的情感－生氣、憤怒、無奈！這是她把這幅畫裝裱起來的原因。
而此，激發了Vashiti畫點的旅程，其實也是一個自我發現（self-discover）的旅程，這個旅程充滿了surprise，「我不能，我不會」其實是「我忽視了...，我沒發現....」
書的名字《The Dot》耐人尋味，翻譯為中文《點》有一語雙關的意思，只要給孩子一點點鼓勵，TA就能有信心做得更好，甚至把自己的潛能發揮出來成為最好的自己。
這個故事老師和家長可以學習到：給一「點」鼓勵，就能激發孩子無限的可能！ 這是激發孩子無限潛能的關鍵點，更是開啟孩子無限未來的關鍵點。

The art class was over, but Vashti sat glued to her chair.
美術課結束了，但沃詩提還沒有走。她坐在位子上。
Her paper was empty.
畫紙仍舊是一片空白。
Vashti’s teacher leaned over blank paper.
這時，她的老師走了過來，探身看著空白的畫紙。
「Ah! A polar bear in a snow storm,」 she said.
驚嘆道：「哇，是一隻冰天雪地裡的白色北極熊」。
「Very funny!」 said Vashti. 「I just can’t draw!」
「真可笑，」 沃詩提說，「我根本就不會畫畫」。
Her teacher smiled. 「Just make a mark and see it takes you.」
但老師微笑著說：「你哪怕是做個記號也可以，看看會是什麼樣子」。
Vashti grabbed a felt-tipped pen and gave the paper a good, strong jab. 「There!」
沃詩提聽了猛的抓起一個帶橡皮的鉛筆，用力的在紙上戳了一下，說：「就這兒了」。
Her teacher picked up the paper and studied it carefully. 「Hmmmm.」
老師拿起畫紙，細細的研究起來：「嗯——！」
She pushed the paper towards Vashti and quietly said, 「Now sign it.」
然後，老師把畫紙放回到沃詩提面前，說：「現在把你的名字籤上去吧」。
Vashti thought for a moment. 「Well, maybe I can’t draw, but I CAN sign my name.」
沃詩提看著畫紙想了一會，自言自語道：「也許我不會畫畫，但籤名我還是會的。」
The next week, when Vashti walked into her art class, she was surprised to see what was hanging above her teacher’s desk.
第二周，當沃詩提再次走進美術教室的時候，她驚奇的發現在老師的桌子上面掛著的一幅畫。
It was the little dot she had drawn- HER DOT!
那是她畫的點啊！
All framed in swirly gold!
而且畫已經用旋渦狀的金黃色相框裝了起來。
「Hmmph! I can make a better dot than THAT!」
「噢！」 沃詩提思考著，「我可以畫比這個點更好的點喔！」
She opened her never-before used set of watercolours and set to work.
於是，她把已經很久不用的水彩筆拿了出來，準備開始畫了。
Vashti painted and painted. A yellow dot. A green dot. A red dot. A blue dot.
沃詩提畫呀，畫呀，畫了好多的點，有紅點、綠點、黃點、藍點……
The blue mixed with the red.
突然，一個藍色的點和一個紅色的點交匯了
She discovered that she could make a PURPLE dot.
發現中間出現了一個紫色的點。
Vashti keptexperimenting.Lot of little dots in many colours.
沃詩提一直不停的嘗試下去，又畫出了許多不同顏色的點。
「If I can make little dots, I can make BIG dots, too.」
「如果我可以畫小點，我就可以畫大點。」
Vashti splashed her colours with a bigger brush on bigger paper to make bigger dots.
沃詩提說完就拿起了一隻大畫筆，在一張大紙上揮毫起來。
Vashti even made a dot by NOT painting a dot.
沃詩提甚至在沒有畫點的情況下，讓紙上出現了一個點。
At the school art show a few weeks later, Vashti’s many dots made quite a splash.
幾周後，在學校的藝術展覽上，沃詩提畫的各種各樣的點畫讓大家大開眼界。
Vashti noticed a little boy gazing up at her.
沃詩提注意到有一個小男孩在認真的看著她的畫。
「You’re a really great artist. I wish I could draw.」 he said.
他對沃詩提說：「你真是個大藝術家，要是我也可以畫畫該多好啊！」
「 I bet you can,」 said Vashti.
「你當然可以，我可以保證」 沃詩提說。
「Me? No, not me. I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler.」
「我？不可能的，即使用尺子比著，我連一條直線也不會畫。」小男孩說。
Vashti smile. She handed the boy a blank sheet of paper. 「 Show me.」
沃詩提笑了，她遞給小男孩一張空白紙，說：「你畫給我看好嗎？」
The boy’s pencil shook as he drew his line.
小男孩畫了起來，他在畫的時候筆在顫抖。
Vashti started at the boy’s squiggle. And then she said…
沃詩提盯著小男孩的話看了一會然後說...
「 Please… sign it.」
「請在這裡籤名。」
