把tap定義為小詞，一是因為它由三個字母構成，二是因為在大家的印象中它是日常生活中常常使用到的「水龍頭」。
溯源：tap在舊的人教版模塊八第三單元 Inventors and inventions裡第一次出現，詞彙表提供的意思如下：
查閱課本第三單元第25頁Using Language Alexander Graham Bell一文：
This original telegraph sent a message over distances using Morse Code (a series of dots tappedout along a wire in a particular order).
顯然，tap在句中的意思是「輕打，輕敲，鍵入 」的意思，to write sth using a computer or a mobile phone/cellphone。又如：
I tapped out a text message to Mandy on my cellphone.
我在手機上給曼迪發了一條簡訊。

在這個句子中，tap作動詞使用，不是課本詞彙表所提供的 」輕打，輕拍，輕敲「的意思，而是make use of (a source of energy, knowledge, etc. that already exists) 「利用，開發，發掘（已有的資源、知識等）」的意思。
因為tap在高考中的使用意思超出了課本詞彙表所提供的意思，很多人將這種現象稱之為「熟詞生義」。
