【經典收藏】孤島為何是lonely island?

我們知道alone表示「單獨的，獨自的」，lonely則表示「孤獨的，孤單的」。

alone是獨自一人的狀態，lonely則是一種孤獨的心理感受。請看例句：

Jackson lived alone in the country but he never felt lonely because he enjoyed the peace a lot.

孤島，為什麼不是alone island, 而是lonely island, 難道這就是所謂的擬人化的手法？！

其實，問題不在於alone與lonely詞義上的區別，而在於alone是個以字母a開頭的形容詞。

英語當中a開頭的形容詞多數是表語形容詞(只能放在系動詞後面)，而不能充當定語形容詞(限定名詞或代詞)。

舉慄子：asleep, afraid, awake, ashamed,etc.我們只能說The boy is asleep.而絕對不會說an asleep boy. ❌

好不容易有一個可以作定語形容詞的available，它居然也要放到名詞後面，作後置定語。如：I have only a room available. 同樣的，我們還有alive. 如：He is the most powerful writer alive.

由於 alone與lonely這兩個單詞都包含了one這個單詞，在表示「單獨的」上是近義，又由於alone不能作定語，因此就有了lonely island的表達。同理，lonely days表示感到孤單的日子，則比較容易理解了吧！

再看一個例句：On the long and lonely nights, a lot of youngsters spend hours trying to hunt for a possible companion.
