A mid-sized Xinjiang joint inside the Second Ring Road
Uyghur cartoon hero Afandi is an enormously popular figure in China’s far west. The donkey-riding wise-fool has a sharp moral compass and a penchant for justice; an ambitious reference for a Gui Jie greasy spoon.
You will be forgiven for missing the 'Afandi' sign on the restaurant’s mosqueish façade and will instead be drawn to and tickled by the neon banner that reads 'muslimdelicious'. Inside, block-coloured feature walls set things playful, a mood either bolstered or sullied by regular 'culture' shows, depending on how you respond to mealside entertainment.
The menu is a vast dossier of Xinjiang plates, with big hitters dapanji (big plate chicken) and shouzhuafan (pilaf) both faithfully Muslim and unequivocally not too bad at all. The Afandi chuan』r served on thin swords are long and strong and what you’re really here for. That and the free beer (0RMB – free) – which is Snow – but it’s literally 0.00RMB.
Afandi is going to work for folks put off by the palatial scale of Xinjiang powerstraunt Baron Rozi. The grub is solid, the buzz rowdy and combined with the free beer it’s all enough to see us return. Alas, the pricks were out of litmus snack kao baozi (baked lamb parcels), but good enough for Afandi, good enough for us.
Dinner for two with free beer: around 130RMB.
